The same day that Jon Jones announced his retirement from the UFC, the local news outlet in Albuquerque where the former UFC champ lived reported that he was charged with a criminal misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident.
The criminal complaint obtained by the Albuquerque Police Department stated that the incident occurred in February. Jones was the alleged driver of a car that had a woman in the front passenger seat “exhibiting signs of significant intoxication and lacking clothing from the waist down.” Although we do not have the entire complaint, you might infer that this woman without pants was not Jones’ wife. The woman stated that Jones was the driver but fled on foot (you might recall that he did this previously when he was involved in a car accident involving a pregnant woman in 2015).
Jones’ attorney was “stunned” by the criminal charge and labeled it as a “false allegation” against his client. He blamed the incident on the intoxicated woman. The police report states that the woman was at Jones’ house with the former champ where they drank alcohol and took mushrooms.
From a legal perspective, Jones’ attorney may be right that since the only witness to this alleged crime was a woman that had her mental capacity impaired, Jones may get out of this case. But, who was driving the car in which she was pantless? The report states that the police want Jones’ cell phone records as the passenger in the car states that she and Jones were communicating.
While this incident is a minor blip on the legal timeline of Jon Jones, it goes to show that his hardest competitor is himself. While he may be considered one of the best inside the Octagon, one has to consider how great he would have been without all of the legal issues. This does not even address incidents not reported by police or others.
Jones’ facade of being a God following family man would be a great story to tell if it were true. However, its easy for most to see through his fakeness and realize that he is just another individual that could not discipline himself from the urges that bring down so many in combat sports.
