On Monday the executive board of the International Olympics Committee approved boxing as a sport for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The return of boxing was a centralized boxing authority to replace the International Boxing Association. The IBA was banished from the Olympics in June 2025 due to “financial and integrity concerns.” World Boxing, a Switzerland-based body founded in 2023 has taken over for the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The upstart Switzerland international sports federation “aims to put the interests of boxers first and ensure that boxing remains at the heart of the Olympic movement,” per its web site.
Notably, Gennady Golovkin was named the chair of the Olympic Commission for World Boxing which helped for the optics. The good news is that boxing will be back and (hopefully) in good hands with the new oversight.
