Saturday Night’s Main Event returns to NBC

December 14, 2024 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

For many in the age bracket, Saturday Night’s Main Event was a quarterly event that pre-empted Saturday Night Live in the 1980s. It returns as part of the new media rights deal with NBCU this Saturday and will feature a lot of the nostalgia from the past-era.

Per SBJ, WWE confirmed that it will be doing four yearly specials on “big NBC.” The theme song, “Obsession” by Animotion will return to the 2024 version of the telecast. Also returning will be Jesse “the Body” Ventura who was one of the commentators of the original show with Vince McMahon.

The telecast will also feature some WWE Hall of Famers per PW Insider. This includes Koko B. Ware, Greg Valentine, Tito Santana and Jimmy Hart.

The telecast will feature Cody Rhodes defending his WWE Title against Kevin Owens. Also, there will be a triple threat match between Gunther, Finn Balor and Damian Priest.

Payout Perspective:

This will be an interesting look into how receptive a general network audience will be for pro wrestling. WWE Smackdown on Fox had produced solid ratings but not as wide and varied as its fall replacement of Big 10 Football games on Friday night. Will the switch of networks and days (from Friday to Saturday) have any bearing on ratings. We will see.
