The Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight set for AT&T Stadium this July will be a sanctioned professional fight according to the State of Texas.
The rules will include 8 two-minute rounds and 14-ounce gloves. The rules were proposed by Holden Boxing, LLC to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Parties from both sides agreed to the terms. The shorter rounds were proposed by the promoter and not suggested by the state.
Tyson last fought an amateur bout against Roy Jones, Jr. in November 2020. He has not been in the ring since then. His last professional bout was in 2005, a loss to Kevin McBride.
Paul fought in March easily knocking out Ryan Bourland in the first round.
The fight will air live on Netflix July 20th.
Payout Perspective:
I am not sure about the significance of the sanctioning of the bout aside that it goes on each professional record. One has to wonder why license the fight and take up the liability if something were to go wrong. Certainly, Tyson is different than a normal 57-year-old but he also is much older than his last professional fight almost 20 years ago.
