Serrano’s fight against Meinke canceled due to eye injury

March 4, 2024 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Amanda Serrano had to cancel her fight against Nina Meinke on Saturday night. She could not get cleared by the athletic commission in Puerto Rico.

Serrano had an eye issue which her team thought would be cleared up by Saturday but it was not. The announcement of the cancellation was not announced until the end of Jake Paul’s first round KO.

One might conclude from Ariel Helwani’s report that Serrano’s injury came from a chemical that was used while she was getting “her hair done.”

According to Nakisa Bidarian, Serrano had her hair done Thursday night. She went for a run on Friday, a chemical from the hair went into her eye. It starting bothering her Friday and that’s why she wore glasses at the ceremonials. Bothered her all day today and when they examined…

Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian announced that it would refund the $1.5 million gate. It was reported that Meinke received her show money.

A major disappointment for Serrano as she was the main event for the evening in front of her home country. It appears a freak accident derailed her big night and we will have to wait until she is ready to return. The refund likely hurt the promotion but it would have hurt more if they took the gate and did not follow through with the main event.

This comes days after the Bite of Seattle mass shooting, during which Barnes was out of town at a conference. Barnes has been criticized for his frequent out of town trips.

But seriously if this is being presented as a pivot, Dana's bluster about being too easy to change the game in #boxing, is actually harder than he thought.

Zuffa Boxing’s long-term plan is becoming less clear.

The promotion launched with the goal of creating a UFC-style boxing league, but its latest moves suggest a shift toward co-promoting major fights.
