UFC 298 took place on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The event was a sell out with several bonus winners on the prelims and the new Featherweight champ getting a $50K bump as well.
Honda Center drew 18,168 fans for a reported $7.26M gate. It was the highest-grossing event in Honda Center history and the highest-grossing MMA event in California history per Dana White at the UFC post-fight press conference. Earlier in the week, the UFC, WWE and Honda Center announced an extension of their agreement to roll events through the venue. White intimated that Honda Center is planning on building out the area to create a whole “experience” which is the new trend among sports venues to increase its footprint by adding restaurants and bars around the venue to increase traffic.
Performances of the Night went to Zhang Minyang, Anthony Hernandez and Ilia Topuria. The Fight of the Night went to Amanda Lemos and Mackenzie Dern. Topuria was the star of the night as he KO’d Alexander Volkanovski to win the Featherweight title. Each earned $50K for their work.
