Canelo to make at least $40M against Charlo

September 30, 2023 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Sportico reports that Canelo Alvarez will make at least $40 million against Jermell Charlo on Saturday when the two square off in Las Vegas. The article indicates that Canelo’s career earnings will exceed $550 million.

Canelo, who is coming off of a sub-par performance against John Ryder, could earn $50 million for the Charlo fight depending on the PPV upside he is due.

Sportico estimates that his career pro earnings will eclipse $550 million since his start in 2005. Only Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. have met this threshhold.

While Canelo is still a big draw, the last two fights may have shown his age. Canelo stepped up in weight class against Russian Dmitry Bivol and lost a decision. He then fought John Ryder in Mexico in a less-than-glamorous fight which saw Canelo in a decision. However, the expectation was a stoppage.

It was announced earlier this week that the gate for Canelo-Charlo would hit $20 million which would be the third time in 2023 that a boxing gate would hit the number. Tank-Garcia and Spence-Crawford being the other two.

Payout Perspective:

The Charlo fight will be a big test for Canelo. A win is expected but if he does lose and/or does not look good in a win, we could see the downside of the 33-year-olds boxing career. He is a big draw for the Mexican fans and a brand name in the sport of boxing. Yet, being this popular means that his ability is being dissected and parsed out to see any diminished skills. The business-side of a Canelo loss could mean that we may not see these big paydays for him.

Contrary to Trump’s statements, senior Israeli and U.S. officials said that the United States had prior knowledge of the Israeli strike and even approved it in an attempt to pressure Iran. After the Iranians retaliated against Qatar’s gas fields, Trump is now changing course
