ESPN reports that Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Boxing will head to mediation on October 18th to hammer out its contractual issues. A lawsuit was filed this summer by Golden Boy after Garcia and his representative sent the promotion a demand letter.
Instead of responding to the demands, Golden Boy filed a lawsuit to enforce its promotional contract with Ryan who last fought this past spring against Gervonta Davis. The PPV fight drew over 1 million buys according to reports. Garcia and his advisor Guadalupe Valencia were sued by Golden Boy. Garcia and Valencia responded by filing a Motion to Dismiss Golden Boy’s lawsuit in August. The Court has yet to decide on the motion although the mediation hopefully will resolve the issue.
You may recall that Canelo Alvarez filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy and received his release from his fight contract with the company.
Payout Perspective:
According to the ESPN article, there is hope that there is resolution to the dispute and that Garcia will return to the ring in November. There have been many stories of fighters being held up or held out by contracts with their promoter or managers. Garcia is a proven PPV star and his youthful good looks, following by the Mexican community and skills likely means the boxer is looking for more money and a bigger cut of the pie. Will Golden Boy comply or will he be given his release like Canelo?
