UFC adds clause prohibiting fighters from gambling on their own fights

October 17, 2022 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The UFC has added additional terms to its Athlete contract which prohibit fighters from placing any wager on any UFC match, including placing any wagers on themselves.

Despite the fact that UFC has sponsors that including gambling sites and discuss gambling lines on its broadcast, it will officially prohibit fighters from betting on themselves.  Fighters can still be sponsored just not allowed to bet at all.

Yahoo! Sports included Exhibit A to UFC fighter contracts which was sent by Hunter Campbell to fighters on Monday.

The addition in the contract also includes an Arbitration provision to resolve disputes.  This clause did not exist prior to the UFC Antitrust lawsuit and if it was in place at the time, may have sent the lawsuit to Arbitration.  There are advantages and disadvantages of arbitrations but we will have more on that later.

Payout Perspective:

This change is of no surprise as we see more states embrace legalized gambling.  In the Yahoo! Sports article, Hunter Campbell was quoted as saying that “a large percentage of regulatory bodies prohibit what they would consider insider betting…” The new policy change does away with fighters betting on themselves.  But, the move is done to appease states as well as provide the appearance of impropriety in competition.
