Gennady Golovkin has filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions stemming from money owed per his last fight against Canelo Alvarez.
According to the lawsuit obtained by BoxingScene.com (not online as of this writing), GGG claims he is owed $1.375M from gate receipts, $450,000 from sponsorships for the HBO PPV with Canelo, $31,500 in PPV “points” and an assortment of other categories which amounts to over $9M per the lawsuit.
GGG claims that Golden Boy acknowledge the hefty amount of money owed GGG but that it has used the money for other purposes and broke promises to pay the amount.
GGG states that he was due 45% of the gate revenue from the September 2018 fight which Alvarez won by decision.
Payout Perspective:
MPO will have more on the lawsuit once we are able to get our hands on it. But, the common theme that occurs in combat sports is someone is not paid money on time and the entity that owes the individual has used it for something else. Whether Golden Boy acknowledge the payments it owed GGG or whether the promotion needs to clarify the deal in its response, we will find out in the coming days. But, with GGG scheduled to fight Canelo in September if he can get past his April return adds that much more intrigue to a trilogy fight. MPO will continue to follow.
