Terrence Crawford has filed a lawsuit against Top Rank Boxing and Bob Arum per a report from the New York Post. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Nevada claims that Arum does not attempt to promote Black fighters.
Crawford has hired famed LA-based Entertainment attorney Bryan Freedman to represent him in this lawsuit.
Crawford split with Arum as his promoter this past year after defeating Shawn Porter in November. Crawford cited the fact that Arum could not secure a megafight with Errol Spence, Jr.
The lawsuit appears to make pointed arguments against Arum and Top Rank citing that they have not made an effort to promote Black fighters. He claims that others have been mistreated by Arum but fear repercussions.
An excerpt of the lawsuit per the Post:
“Because this is boxing, a sport with a checkered history, and because Arum is now dismissed as just a grumpy old white man, Arum continues to make racist and bigoted statements and purposefully damage the reputations of Black boxers without any consequences.
“This is generally because the affected boxers, who are in long-term contracts with Top Rank, fear that if they speak up, they will be placed on the sideline and not given the opportunity to fight during the life of their deal, which could be 5 to 7 years.”
The New York Post received the lawsuit but it has yet to land onto the Nevada web site for the public. MPO will discuss the lawsuit in depth once we receive it but it would seem to be case of bad feelings and ill will. It will make interesting discovery to find out how Crawford will prove that Arum purposely discriminated against Black fighters. Crawford sounded frustrated with Arum post-fight after his victory over Shawn Porter and this lawsuit seems to be more animus toward Arum. MPO will continue to follow.
