Report: Mayweather-Paul reaches 1M PPV buys

June 9, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Sportico is reporting that Sunday night’s PPV event between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Logan Paul drew 1 million buys.  The numbers were revealed by Showtime which produced the PPV.

According to Sportico, the 1 million buys would put the media revenue from the bout at more than $50 million.  The event went for $49.99 on most satellite and cable distributors.  It was also available on the Showtime app although there were technical issues during the night.

Another side benefit of the spectacle was that it was the network’s biggest day of new subscriptions since its Showtime Streaming Service launched in 2015.

Per multiple reports from Sportico, it lists the guarantees and upside for both with Mayweather guaranteed $10 million plus 50% of the PPV buys.  Paul made $250,000 and 10% of the PPV buys.  With this report, it would mean Mayweather made $35 million and Paul made $5 million.  This does not calculate any other bonuses and/or sponsorships they may have had related to the bout.

Payout Perspective:

The overarching theme to the news of the buy rate is that Floyd Mayweather is a PPV draw regardless of how old he is or who he might fight.  While Paul may have brought in some fans of his YouTube channel, Mayweather was the A side in this fight.  With this success, its hard not to think that celebrity/crossover fights won’t continue in the future.
