Jon Jones announced that he has retained Richard Schaefer as an adviser which he believes will give him the proper leverage to negotiate with the UFC.

In a social media post, Jones touted the boxing executive as putting “together some of the biggest global Pay Per View events” over a 20-year period. Jones has been in a contractual impasse with the UFC over his next fight which many anticipated to be a heavyweight showdown with Francis Ngannou.
Notably, Jones left his former agents at First Round Management earlier this year as the former champ was behind negotiating with the UFC for his last couple fights. His last fight was in February 2020.
However, Dana White balked at the purse request made by the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. He has now scheduled Ngannou to face Derrick Lewis for the title.
Schaefer, the former CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, now runs his own boxing promotional company called Ringstar Sports.
Payout Perspective:
Jones’ social media post infers that there will be some type of unique PPV split between the UFC and the fighter. However, based on the UFC past and current business dealings it’s unlikely that the company would stray from its model which does not offer massive paydays to its fighter like boxing does for big event fights. Jones believes that he is due the money based upon the revenue his events generate, but the UFC does not operate in this fashion. Rather, they base their pay on a sliding scale not commensurate with how much an individual fighter brings to the event.
