Civil lawsuit filed in Ireland against Conor McGregor for alleged sexual misconduct

January 20, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The NY Times reports that Conor McGregor has been sued for alleged sexual misconduct related to an encounter with a woman in Ireland in 2018.

Irish police and prosecutors declined to pursue criminal charges after investigating the former UFC champion.  Through a representative, McGregor denied the allegations.

The report from the NY Times indicates that the plaintiff knew McGregor and was going to a party with the fighter.  On the way to the hotel where he was taking cocaine was provided to her and she took some. McGregor and the plaintiff were alone in the bedroom of the penthouse suite where McGregor was staying and he attempted to have sex with her despite her protests.  According to the statement of claim obtained from the NY Times, McGregor wrapped his arms around her neck and lifted her up three times.  He then proceeded to have sex with her.

According to the Times, another man at the party had sex with her too although she does not recall that occurring.  He is named in the lawsuit as well.

The report of rape was not filed until 30 days after the incident.  This appears to be due to the trauma suffered by the woman.

The news comes upon McGregor’s return to the Octagon this Saturday night.

Payout Perspective:

It’s clear that this lawsuit and the timing of the reporting couldn’t be worse.  The UFC will do its best to disassociate itself from McGregor’s personal life and his legal issues.  Notwithstanding this is a bad public relations problem.  While no criminal actions were taken, a civil claim could prove to be damning for McGregor’s reputation.  This is a terrible situation for the woman in this case.  If we believe that this happened, her name and reputation will be driven through the mud by many McGregor supporters.  The lawsuit and statement of claim is just one side of the story.  Yet, McGregor’s past indiscretions and the statement by the woman make this something that could hurt his reputation going forward.
