Flyweight Champ gets a PPV upside starting in 2021

January 5, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

MMA Fighting reports that Deiveson Figueriredo will be receiving a PPV upside starting in 2021.  The flyweight champion was the headliner on the last two UFC PPVs of 2020.

Figueriredo defeated Alex Perez in the main event of UFC 255 in November at The Apex in Las Vegas.  He stayed in Vegas to make his second title defense against Brandon Moreno at UFC 256 just three weeks later.  Figueriredo and Moreno fought to a draw and the fight was considered one of the best in the UFC in 2020.

Figueriredo is 9-1-1 in the UFC and fought 4 times in 2020.  He earned the Flyweight Championship this past July after he failed to make weight for the fight in February.

In some instances, a main event fighter receives a percentage of the sales of the PPV buys if it surpasses a certain number of purchases.  For instance, if an event draws 226,000 buys, and a fighter has a clause to receive $2 for every buy over 200, he or she would receive $50,000.

Payout Perspective:

While PPV buys is something that main event fighters receive as an incentive to promote the fight, Figueriredo did not have one in his contract when he became champion.  Moreover, there is that notable video of Dana White paying the Flyweight champ’s bonus in cash.  While cash is great, having a greater percentage of the overall event would be meaningful for someone like Figueriredo.  Not having points prior to 2021 can be seen as a disrespect to the division as prior to Fig-Moreno, fights in the division have not been strong.  Perhaps this newfound ‘investment’ will show that the flyweights deserve respect.  On a broader level, the points issue was thought to be a thing of the past with the double wall of paying for plus and the PPV.  But
