On Wednesday, Variety reported that the UFC would raise its prices for PPVs in 2021 $5 to $69.99. This goes along with the raise in ESPN+ in the US from $49.99 per year to $59.99 per year.
This is the second time that ESPN+ has increased the price of its PPVs. At the start of 2020, the UFC PPV events went from $59.99 to $64.99. It was the first increase since it launched on ESPN+ in April 2018. This summer ESPN hiked up the monthly price of the digital platform $1 from $4.99 to $5.99. Already on the horizon from March 2021, Disney will increase its triple-play bundle of Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN+ from $12.99 per month to $13.99 per month.
Conor McGregor, who will headline the first UFC PPV in January, had something to say about it.
Payout Perspective:
Remember a time when MMA fans paid the PPV price through its satellite or cable distributor. Now, the increase of PPVs ensures that a fan will pay at least $75 a month (or even more if there are two events in a month) for UFC PPVs. While this may make some consumers a little choosier with which events they purchase, the end game has Disney and Zuffa profiting.
