Fox Sports signs on to air PBC events in virtual reality

November 10, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal reports that Fox Sports have signed a deal with Facebook to produce Premier Boxing Champions events in virtual reality starting with Saturday’s Amiclar Vidal-Edward Ortiz fight.

The live events will be available in Venues for Oculus Quest.  The production will be handled by New York-based company, Livelike, which shall have five cameras in the ring.

It previously signed a deal with NextVR in 2016.   Fox Sports gave viewers an option to air the 2018 FIFA World Cup in virtual reality along with select college football games.

Payout Perspective:

Fox Sports have signed up to air 3 PBC events in virtual reality.  While VR has not taken off in sports, Fox Sports is taking a shot and using boxing as its test case.  This does not mean that Fox Sports will air all of its sports with a VR option but it sees the test as something to explore to see how many people like the technology.
