Dana White confirmed to the Las Vegas Review Journal that its next event will take May 30th at The Apex in Las Vegas. The event will feature Tyron Woodley versus Gilbert Burns in a welterweight matchup.
White sent a text to the Journal last night to confirm that the Vegas location is a go. In the alternative, if White did not receive clearance, he was looking to Arizona which has lifted the ban on many of its non-essential activities including professional sports.
The UFC are coming off three events in Jacksonville, Florida last week as it was one of the first sports back in North America. The company implemented health and safety protocols to address the concerns of COVID-19.
The state of Nevada suspended operations with the commission halting operations in late March. There has not been an official statement from the commission or the state regarding re-opening but White’s text to the Journal likely means that the state is easing restrictions on what it deems to be non-essential work.
Payout Perspective:
The move to The Apex on May 30th is good news for boxing which is still looking to hold events without fans starting in June. If Nevada starts to regulate combat sports again, this should mean that boxing and more UFC events will take place in Nevada. For the UFC, The Apex will be the hub for events and fighters will likely be able to train at the Performance Institute. Of course, there is still the UFC Fight Island where the company will hold international events but if The Apex is available for domestic events it will help the company with logistics of the events and offer a centralized location.
