MMAJA issues updated statement on UFC media waiver

May 20, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Mixed Martial Arts Journalists Association has learned that the UFC has adjusted the wording on its media agreement to cover company events.  Still, MMAJA believes that the media should not have to sign such an agreement to report on the UFC.

Via MMAJA:

The officers of the MMA Journalists Association are aware of an update to the agreement that the UFC has asked media members to sign in order to cover live events in person. While we are encouraged by the UFC’s willingness to adjust the wording of the agreement in response to concerns brought by the MMAJA and others, we still cannot advise members to sign this agreement, which we still regard as unnecessarily restrictive.

Payout Perspective:

Maybe the bright side here is that the UFC is cognizant of push back regarding the agreement that media members are being made to sign.  Despite not providing a direct comment to MMAJA on the matter, its clear that they were aware that it may have been an overbroad request and the inference from MMAJA is that the UFC has recalibrated its request.  Yet, the concern of having to sign away rights of a free press is at the heart of the issue and limitations of any kind in reporting an event seem to be too restrictive.  We will see if there’s some sort of response from the UFC as a result of the latest statement by MMAJA.
