The New York Times has obtained the UFC Jacksonville Events Operations Plan which it used as protocol in lead-up to UFC 249. It notes that based on Saturday night’s event, there were breaches of the protocol from the plan.
The 20-page plan is a comprehensive look at the ways in which the UFC would adhere to guidelines to protect the health and safety of those involved. It included rules on social distancing, advance screening procedures, temperature screening, cleaning procedures and more.
The UFC released a statement which indicated the plan “provides a road map for prudent, safe, and responsible working environment.” Indeed the plan will be reviewed and scrutinized by other leagues as well as employers as they seek to reopen.
But execution of the plan is key and there were several instances throughout the event on Saturday in which there were breaches of the plan. Notably, Joe Rogan’s post-fight interviews in the Octagon were contrary to the plan that there would be “no face-to-face” interviews. Moreover, the edict prohibits “contact-based greetings” were ignored repeatedly which were noticed at the weigh-ins.
Payout Perspective:
We will see how Wednesday event turns out as the UFC goes once again at the VyStar Arena in Jacksonville. Certainly, one might expect missteps on the first night of the plan so we will see if they improve upon Saturday and adhere to such things as social distancing and the wearing of masks. Its too early to know if the protocol has worked since we won’t know about whether or not other athletes or coaches’ contract COVID-19 until later. But, we are dealing with uncharted territory and the UFC plan will be reviewed to see if there are any issues that can be fixed or improved upon as time goes on in dealing with returning to some form of normal during this pandemic.
