Dana White held the first of two teleconferences with his contracted fighters to discuss reopening the UFC to events which includes his plans for a “Fight Island.” White, who is a part of the Administration’s task force to reopen the United States, felt confident in going forward based on information he knows from the Trump Administration.
White’s teleconference Friday and this Monday excludes third parties, managers or agents of fighters. There was no immediate explanation for this exclusion. White indicated that no fighter would be required to fight if they did not feel safe. He also did not reveal the details of the location of the next events but Fight Island was a reality that will be ready in late May or Early June.
He also indicated that the fighters that had their bouts postponed due to the pandemic would have priority for fights. White stressed that there would be no catchweight bouts.
Payout Perspective:
The teleconference seemed to be a morality booster for fighters, a check-up to see the status of their health and to gage how many were concerned with returning. While White made sure that it was known that any fighter could reach out for help, there was not a plan to financially assist those in need. But, the meetings seem to be a way to reconnect and get fighters back into thinking about training in earnest again.
