Spider-Stylebender set for Melbourne at UFC 234

November 24, 2018 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Anderson Silva will return to the UFC next year against one of the hottest star the promotion has right now in Israel Adesanya at UFC 234.  The event will take place February 9th (Feb. 10th locally) in Melbourne, Australia.  ESPN’s Brett Okamoto was the first to report the fight.

Silva, the former UFC middleweight champion last fought in the Octagon in February 2017 in an upset win over Derek Brunson at UFC 208.

Silva had to deal with two failed drug test during his time in the UFC.  His latest was due to a contaminated supplement from an out-of-competition test and USADA handed him a one year suspension which allowed him to return this month.

Adesanya is coming off of a KO win over the aforementioned Brunson at UFC 230 earlier this month.

Payout Perspective:

The 29-year-old from Nigeria has a style that is reminiscent of The Spider.  The Last Stylebender is on a roll and facing Silva could be a one-sided affair and an example of MMA eating their own.  The good news is that this is an intriguing fight as the upstart meets the legend.  Adesanya also grew up in New Zealand so should be a local favorite.

Dana White and the UFC are struggling to sell out UFC 328 despite a stacked card, with ticket prices starting around $350 likely playing a role.

That said, it’s not just the UFC—even MVP events with $70 tickets have had trouble filling arenas, suggesting a broader trend.
