Updated GGG-Jacobs PPV buy rate now at 170K PPV buys

March 25, 2017 by Jason Cruz 8 Comments

Yahoo! Sports reports the update PPV buys of Gennady Golovkin and Danny Jacobs drew 170,000 PPV buys.  The buy rate was confirmed by Tom Loeffler.

The initial estimate of the PPV ranged from 130,00 to 150,000 PPV buys.  Loeffler indicated that GGG’s 2015 PPV against David Lemieux drew 153,000 buys.

Payout Perspective:

The additional buys are spun as an improvement and due to the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.  The improvement shows that there is a fan base for GGG but not ones that are willing to pay $60-$70 for a PPV.  GGG’s PPV draw may be something that might hurt him going into contract negotiations for a fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Its decent, when you are paying $70 a pop thats not bad money, but I am of the mind that someone of his stature should be clearing at least 400K on the ppvs. But then again, I hate ppv, I prefer the PBC model myself. I dont have a lot of faith in Loeffler and his style of promoting which is even worse than Arum and DLH. There is little difference between him and Kathy Duva

GGG’s problem is that he’s spent the majority of his career having opponents duck him. He hasn’t been able to get top talent in the ring until recently – and even then Kell Brook was way undersized and Daniel Jacobs is still coming into his own. Big money guys like Cotto and Canelo want nothing to do with him. Unless you’re as exciting as Mike Tyson, it’s tough to sell PPVs when you’re the only draw on the card. It’s no knock on GGG, he deserves better, but he struggles to get big money fights and his PPV results show it.

Diego, thats why he shouldnt be fighting on PPV, thats not helping him build a fan base nor will it help him in future negotiations against Canelo. But to be honest, I tihnk PBC is showing the future isnt the PPV model.
