OAC to review Eye-Correia incident, fines Overeem

September 9, 2016 by Jason Cruz 1 Comment

MMA Fighting reports that the Ohio Athletic Commission may assess discipline for the shoving incident between Jessica Eye and Bethe Correia at the televised UFC 203 weigh-ins.

At the faux weigh-ins (since the actual weigh-ins took place earlier in the day), Eye shoved Correia prior to the two facing off.  OAC Executive Director Bernie Profato indicated that he would look at the video and then speak to the two fighters.

Earlier in the day, the commission fined Alistair Overeem $500 for being late to the early, official weigh-ins.

Payout Perspective:

Does the stance put on by the OAC ring hollow considering the passive way it explained providing CM Punk with his MMA license?  Clearly, you don’t want a fight before the fight.  Then again, what’s the purpose of having two fighters that don’t like each other face each other the night before their fight? So, while Eye-Correia’s dustup might be an issue if one got hurt, the fact is that it likely generated more interested in that fight.  As for the fine for Overeem, he’s a heavyweight, don’t think there was an advantage in him holding off to get weighed in.  The fine was unwarranted but done to show some force.

You shouldn’t put your hands on your opponent, I don’t think it was a big push but it caught Bethe and she flew back and then she tried to get at her, if she barely moved it wouldn’t be such a big deal.

Overeem, had a set time, he wasn’t so far away and stuck in traffic or something, so even if he was 5 minutes late, he’s waisting the time of the commission and even the journalists covering it.
