UFC 202 Prelims draws 1.3M viewers on FS1

August 23, 2016 by Jason Cruz 19 Comments

The UFC 202 Prelims on FS1 drew 1.3M viewers on Saturday night per Sports TV Ratings.

The event, which aired from 8-10pm ET drew 816,000 viewers in the adult 18-49 demo.  The event featured Cody Garbrandt and Takeya Mizugaki.  The Alpha Male fighter stopped Mizugaki in the first round.

The event peaked with 1.507M viewers in the 9:15-9:30pm ET quarter hour.

UFC PPV Prelims through 202

Payout Perspective:

In comparison, the UFC 196 Prelims (Conor-Nate I) drew 1.8 million viewers and 1.074M viewers in the adult 18-49 demo.  The prelims landed second in sports cable viewing on Saturday to the NASCAR Sprint Cup on the NBC Sports Network.  If the prelims ratings foreshadow the PPV viewership, we should see a very good buy rate for UFC 202.

6 million and it wasn’t even a “good fight” a buzz has been generated about PBC congrats to Heymen AKA the Hedge Fund Baby for bringing boxing back to network where it belongs. I just wish they could get Lampley to call the fights.

Congrats to PBC but lets be real for a minute. How many of the 6.34 million are gonna watch anything PBC coming up. Checking the schedule and there are 5 PBC events coming up with 1 last night on FS1. 2 Spike, 1 FS1, 1 NBCSN, and 1 Bounce.

The Spike events might average the 800k-900k and peak over a million(maybe) but everything else will probably do 200k or less and the problem becomes there is nothing to build towards. ESPN is done with them(at least for the year possibly for good) and there hasn’t been any talk of any events on CBS, NBC, or FOX so pretty much we will get FS1, NBCSN, Spike, and Bounce cards from here on out.

Next year is when it becomes interesting. Al’s time buys are up and from what I am hearing only Spike(and probably Bounce which Haymon owns part in) want in on the PBC.

But how many will watch errol spence again with his style? A lot…he is a future super star…6 mil exposure is all good…did fmj get 6 mil views at that stage of his career?

As usual, d is trying to spin PBC’s immense success as some sort of colossal failure.

Except for about 1 million fanboys, no one cares about McLoudmouth or the UFC.

So get with the program, d. The UFC is going downhill. The sooner you understand that, the better.

Half Life….if they were not interested, they would have turned it off…but they didn’t. The only problem PBC, and boxing in general, has is promotion and advertising. People don’t know when its on, if Haymon were to advertise his shows more and put them in the correct slots on the correct nights/days, you would see this as the norm. Great numbers, great advertising strategy. Most watched combat sports show of the year, of several years, and best since 1998 for boxing. Well done indeed. Im surprised the article hasn’t made it to mmapayout.

75% of the viewership that was watching the Olympics stayed and watched the fight.

It averaged 4.8m and peaked at 6.34m during the KO in the 6th round.
Had this fight went 12 rounds, it probably wouldve peaked around 7m-8m as the viewership kept growing.

Rumor is that Haymon and HBO are talking, so I wouldnt be too worried about boxing on TV.

I would bet that NBC, FOX, and CBS will all have future PBC cards

PBC on FOX with Wilder-Arreola averaged 2.54m for their fight and peaked at 3.2m. That is about what UFC on FOX does.
Thurman-Porter on CBS peaked at 3.94m.
    Spence-Bundu peaked at 6.34m.

The point is that people will tune in, and if Spence, Garcia, Thurman, and even Broner or Brook start mixing it up then you can best believe those viewership numbers will increase.

Exactly Wil, boxing has no idea how to sell its product, which actually shows how evolved and selective boxing fans are: they are immune to publicity gimmicks and tricks. All they care is the fight. Nothing more. Nothing less. They don’t care about pre- and post-fight conferences. UFC fans on the other hand have got to be among the most brainwashed sports fans I have ever come to know! Most of the newer UFC “champs” have no more than three belts and only 6-7 years of training behind them. How anyone can think UFC fighters are “the best” in the world is beyond me.

@Caramel City, the Olympic Basketball game had 11.7 million viewers even if you take the peak of 6.34 million viewers that is 54% of the viewership not 75%.

@Full Life, I’m not “d”. I know it’s hard for you guys to believe that there is more than 1 person that comes on to mma site who doesn’t praise boxing numbers 24/7.

@Wil, they advertised the schedule during that event of the upcoming PBC cards. So are 6.34 million people just turning their head or going to the bathroom when they are announcing it? IMO no, they see it but they are not as interested in it.

I’ve said it before I’m a boxing fan and I like when they do well but I’m also not gonna sit and act like I think the PBC is the future of boxing or that I think they can do these numbers on a regular basis. We’ll see what happens going forward and as always it’s a pleasure talking with you gentlemen.

It’s not that you’re not praising boxing, it’s the fact that you’re as delusional and obnoxious as d that makes people think you two are the same person.

PBC’s latest event drew about as many viewers as the last 3 major UFC events put together.

Tyson v Klitch drew about 18 million viewers only on German TV whereas the UFC can barely draw 2 million in the US. Do you think anyone in Germany and the rest of the world cares about the UFC? The only noticeable exceptions would be Brazil and Ireland, where most of MG’s fanboys come from, many of which have actually outgrown their fanboyism anyway so don’t expect the overall figures to be spectacular.

I’m delusional and obnoxious? This is an mma website, this is article talking about UFC ratings and all you guys feel the need to hijack these articles and tell me how bad the UFC sucks and how much boxing rules.

I enjoy both but apparently that’s not ok with you guys or sharing an opinion that’s not 100% pro-boxing is apparently not ok. I haven’t said anything about the UFC in this whole comment section. I’m not sitting here telling anybody that UFC is better than boxing or anything like that yet I’m a UFC fan boy, I’m a McGregor fanboy.

Go fuck yourself Full Life and fix your site Jason. Don’t worry boys I won’t waste my time visiting or commenting at this site anymore.

Yes. And they buy PPVs. And at the end of the day, that’s where the money is.

I’m happy for Spence. He’s now stopped two guys who had never been stopped before. This will give him a lot of momentum going into a title fight, and if he performs well we could see him in a PPV in 2017.

Just because someone is stupid enough to throw away 50 bucks to be able to watch a mediocre fight doesn’t mean the sport itself is doing well. No fight is worth 50 bucks. Most boxing fans think this way too, which is the main difference between old school boxing/MMA fans and today’s UFC fans: the first ones are evolved whereas the last ones are just fanboys. If the UFC’s PPV buys were so profitable, the UFC wouldn’t have been sold so fast. There’s an obvious downtrend that’s getting more obvious with each event.

without McGregor, the UFC is without a star at the moment, and that is the truth. And Full Life is right, boxing is global folks…and pulls in high numbers in countries like the UK (which has 14 world champions now), Germany, Denmark, Norway, Mexico, Japan, Australia, South Africa…etc etc. What UFC “only” fans just cant understand is boxing is much bigger than what they think it is.
The way boxing was promoted in the 80s and the early 90s, it was more accessible to the fans than it is today. Video games, contracts with soda companies, ads in newspapers, etc etc etc….the problem is simply promotion. The young people today are more about presentation than product.

“If the UFC’s PPV buys were so profitable, the UFC wouldn’t have been sold so fast.”

That statement defies all logic. The opposite is true actually. It was bought at a record price because of the potential.

By your logic the fact that no one has offered to buy out Top Rank is because it’s so profitable. Huh?

The “record” price is the one that defies all logic since not even soccer clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are worth that much.
If you choose to believe that a globally irrelevant MMA platform is worth more than soccer clubs like Arsenal, whose players earn in two hours more than McLoudmouth has earned in 10 years, I have a bridge to sell you.

Suppose the UFC goes the way of Pride by the end of the year (and by the looks of it it most likely will). What are you going to say then?
