Conor McGregor tweets he’s retiring

April 19, 2016 by Jason Cruz 37 Comments

The UFC and MMA fans have been thrown for a loop as Conor McGregor sent out a tweet stating that he was retiring.  McGregor was scheduled to fight Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 200.

I have decided to retire young.
Thanks for the cheese.
Catch ya’s later.

— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) April 19, 2016

You think only MMA fans know Conor McGregor?  Per Darren Rovell.

68,000 retweets to Conor McGregor’s “retiring” tweet in 2 hours. Only 8 athlete tweets in 2015 had more RT’s. https://t.co/6nKj4XWKkM

— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) April 19, 2016

The RTs at this writing is over 87,000 and 60,000 likes.

Payout Perspective:

Either this is a ploy, toying with the fans on social media or the real thing.  If it is for real, then the UFC has a real issue on its hands for its biggest event of the year.  With Aldo-Edgar and Tate-Nunes likely being the co-main event for the company’s biggest event of the year, UFC 200 does not seem like the heralded event it once was thought to be.  We will see in the coming days, weeks if the tweet is true.

Hahahaha. I doubt this is real, but even if it is, I find it amusing that The Weakest equates McGregor not fighting at UFC 200 as “Christmas”. Hahahahaha. That’s how desperate he has been to see a change of the success mma has been doing. Not to mention how bad boxing is in the gutter.

Easy fix to this anyway if it were true for the card, they could do Jones-Cormier at 200, provided Jones wins, which he likely will.

McGregor is out of ufc 200. The ppv number will likely go down now, but as I pointed out if Jones-Cormier is the replacement, it will still do over 1m buys and will be a more interesting fight anyway.

@ D It’s true that no one cares about Jones. His only 2 PPV to sell well were against Sonnen and Cormier. People paid to watch THEM, not him. All his other PPV were terrible (Anderson Silva was simmilar, his best showings were against Sonnen 1 & 2 and his rematch against Weidman).

@jf, what you said was not accurate. First off, his 2nd biggest ppv was against Evans, not Sonnen. Jones-Sonnen didn’t do big numbers. And most importantly, Jones was the A on those fights, and yes, typically when you get a relatively big ppv, it takes two fighters to get those numbers. All of his other ppvs were not terrible. Most of them hover around 500k buys which isn’t bad at all.

Anyway, if that fight goes down at 200, they will easily hit 1m buys.

Good for this young man, he has gotten rich, he will no doubt have a career in entertainment which will pay more without having to take the punishment. Well done. He left his mark, he attracted the casuals, no need to stick around and lose again. Respect.

I doubt he is done based on what happened. White said he removed McGregor from 200 because Conor refused to film some promos in Vegas. Sounds like it could be a contract issue, or perhaps something else, but I doubt he is retiring.

“quit clowning d, McChump is worth 15 mil, Cena, The rock and Stone cold are all worth more.”

First off, McGregor is worth more than that, and second, those guys wrestled for years and then went on to do top billing movies. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were wrong about Cena and Stone Cold. The point though, is that in 2015/2016, McGregor made more money than any of them ever did when they were wrestling.

“A fight like this would normally headline HBO World Championship Boxing, but the network has faced budget problems, and this bout surely would command a large license fee. So Arum is doing the only thing he can: assuming the risk and putting it on pay-per-view.”

    HBO boxing having problems??? Hahahaha.

Boxing is in such bad shape, they can’t even get HBO rights fees. Hahahaha.

Boxing has no big fights anytime soon, the UFC will still have 3 fights this year hit 1m ppvs with or without McGregor…who isn’t retiring.

Not his fault, but GGG is again not fighting anyone big, Canelo-Khan is the only thing worth noting because it is the only fight that will do even a decent ppv number for boxing.

MMA fights are so much bigger this year. Haha.

In relation to Thurman-Porter and GGG vs whoever…..all of the UFC fights.

In relation to Canelo-Khan, there will be at least 2 more that are bigger. One will involve the winner of Tate-Nunes fighting Rousey and this has been confirmed. The other will be UFC 200 regardless of the headliner.
