Lyoto Machida caught by USADA, fight with Hendo off of UFC on Fox 19

April 13, 2016 by Jason Cruz 17 Comments

USADA notified the UFC on Wednesday that Lyoto Machida declared using a banned substance during an out-of-competition sample collection last week.  As a result, his fight with Dan Henderson scheduled for UFC on Fox 19 this Saturday on Fox has been taken off the card.

Machida stated that he was unaware that the substance was prohibited in and out of competition.

The UFC released a statement on the former light heavyweight champion.

The UFC organization was made aware today by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency  (USADA), the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, that Lyoto Machida declared the usage of a banned substance during an out-of-competition sample collection last week. Machida stated that he was unaware that the substance was prohibited both in and out of competition and, in accordance with the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, his disclosure of usage will be taken into consideration by USADA during any potential results management and adjudication process.

Payout Perspective:

Unlike other findings, it appears that Machida let USADA know of the substance (not yet known) that he was taking.  The disclosure may help with any potential penalty that might occur as a result of the finding.  Machida, 37, may face a 2-year suspension which could be the end of his UFC career.  Of course, it does appear Machida was up front with the usage of the banned substance so that might mitigate the potential penalty.  As for removing the fight, there was no choice especially since it was going to be one of the televised bouts on Fox.  It definitely is disappointing news.

Usada is too strict and some of the things banned don’t make sense.

Other sports don’t involve 4oz gloves and roiders

No, they involve 12 oz gloves and much higher rates of dementia/fatalities like boxing. Quick, name a mma fighter who has dementia from mma. I’ll give you a hint, there are zero cases. Boxing on the other hand…..

Or pro football and hockey with significantly higher rates of traumatic brain injuries.

PED usage in boxing is at an insanely high level. The testing is a joke and there are still a ton of big named boxers who have failed in competition tests.

And by new, you mean 21+ years old. Was Jermain Taylor fighting back prior to that, because he has the beginnings of dementia and he didn’t even go pro until 2001. During that time, zero mma fighters have the onsets of dementia from fighting in mma. It doesn’t take long to show those symptoms- same thing happened to Meldrick Taylor, Ali, and a number of other boxers. And let’s not even get into deaths.

Gary Goodridge has been diagnosed with dementia pugilistica, the earlier days of mma were not as organized as they are today. I dont think we will ever see the levels of brain trauma and death in mma as we see in boxing since boxing is about punches to the head and the liver, both of which have long term implications. Not sure how this “debate” turned to this rather than Machida and PEDs….

Wil, horrible example! You didn’t do the research and you didn’t read what I said.

Gary Goodridge had a total of 38 kickboxing fights!

He took FAR MORE damage in his kickboxing bouts than he did in mma. You can’t say the damage he received was from mma.

Relax. What I did was name an mma fighter with the PD. Im not trying to write a novel like you are.

Your point was to attempt to one up me by contradicting what I was stating. The problem as I pointed out, was that you didn’t read what I said, and you probably didn’t even know Goodridge kickboxed. The fact is- as I’ve pointed out, no one has ever been diagnosed with dementia strictly from mma.

Actually I did, being that mixed martial arts as a higher percentage of fighters who come from other combat sports, and since i wasnt trying to “win a debate” I mentioned a fighter from mma who has PD. Many mma fighters have also been kickboxers, boxers, wrestlers, pro wrestlers, judokas, etc etc. Thats what makes it “mma.” In any event, you have a good one there.

Kickboxing is not considered mma. Your attempt to correct me was not valid. My point stands as accurate.
