PBC Boxing on Spike TV drew 873,000 viewers on Friday night according to Sports TV Ratings. The event featured Adrien Broner as he stopped Ashley Theophane in the 9th round.
The fight between Broner and Theophane averaged 1,013,000 viewers (10:36pm-11:21pm) per Spike TV which is the most-watch PBC fight on the network. It drew 443,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo per Sports TV Ratings.
Despite his win, he lost the WBA Light Welterweight title since he did not make weight at 140 lbs.
After his win, Broner called out Floyd Mayweather, Jr. who was in attendance. The retired Mayweather smiled and clapped at Broner’s challenge.

Payout Perspective:
It was a weird couple week for Broner as a warrant was issued for his arrest in Cincinnati from a robbery. Yet, he was allowed to fight in Washington, D.C. despite the warrant. Broner turned himself in on Monday. According to TMZ, he was released after posting $100,000 bail. Is Broner someone that Spike would like to feature in its new “Fighters First” initiative?
The ratings are positive for Spike as they are the best for PBC on the network.

Pathetic numbers. Bellator routinely outdraws PBC’s big star.
Wil says
Good numbers for PBC on Spike. No doubt the hullabaloo about his legal troubles helped considering his opponent was almost completely unknown even to true boxing fans. The kid has talent thats for sure but I get the sense that his inability to leave the streets behind (as with so many boxers) will be his career downfall.

D……..Broner isnt PBCs biggest star, that would statistically go to Guerro who has had 3 fights all doing over 1m viewers, the Garcia and Thurman fights both being over 3m views, the Thurman fight topping out at over 4m viewers. No need to get threatened now….
Wil says
The Greatest, already its numbers have this card topping at over 1m, I suspect the final numbers will top off somewhere around 1.2-1.4m viewers, which would be a big turn out for a PBC friday night.

Bellator averages around 600k from what I heard.
But the average for Broner-Theophane was 1.013M as of right now.
The average will go up and the peak viewership should go up by alot too.
Broner vs a notable name is gonna do big numbers on NBC or ESPN

Wil,
It’s debatable. Going into the startup, they focused on Broner. Also Guerrero’s fights were on the networks.

Some facts that prove the weakest lied/exaggerated again:
PBC average Spike ratings: 619k avg. viewers
Bellator average Spike ratings(since PBC’s inception): 815k avg viewers
That includes a majority of cards with headliners like Warren, Lima, Kongo, and a few guys no one’s ever heard of. They only had a few fights headlined with big names(albeit has beens). PBC on the other hand had top ranking fighters on their spike shows like Broner, Khan, etc.

I like to see both Bellator and PBC doing good numbers, I like the UFC doing good numbers as well. I hope that Bellator Kickboxing does well when it debuts.

Boxing global….ufc is north america….oh wait the record of u.s. ppv is….boxing too hahahaha….olympics is coming where the worlds best athletes compete each nation sends theyre best…boxings one of them….how come mma is not there? hahahaha…its not popular globally?
d says
Yeah, because Brazil, where the UFC is about to sell out a stadium and generate more revenue than anything boxing has put out there this year domestic or abroad, is in N. America.
MMA bigger in the following countries: US, Canada, Brazil, Japan, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Russia. Boxing is popular in mostly very poor, third world nations.
French-Canadian Boxing Fan says
@d
Broner/Theophane did better ratings than all Bellator shows except Bellator 149.
About MMA v Boxing globally. Well, Brazil is an oddity in Latin America in that they for whatever cultural reason don’t like boxing. Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Colombia (to an extent) and others are all boxing hotbeds.
Bob Arum and Top Rank have said that they want to target the Brazilian market and who knows, maybe at some point boxing will catch on in Brazil.
I don’t know where you get your fact that MMA is bigger in Russia than boxing. Russia is producing some of the best boxers in the world. Wilder is fighting Povetkin in Russia pretty soon.
In Canada MMA is on the decline, the UFC barely bothers anymore. Outside of the UFC, MMA is a wasteland, MFC is the largest Canadian MMA promotion and they had their last card in the fall of 2014. Check out MFC’s YouTube channel and look at how low their video stats are: https://www.youtube.com/user/maximumfightingtv.
Here in my Province of Quebec, boxing is king. Quebec-based boxers are in the media all the time, all over the place. Yvon Michel of promotional boxing company GYM is a rising international player in the world of boxing. In Quebec, we also have Interbox and Eye Of The Tiger Management who are involved in boxing. In the rest of Canada there are players as well. Check Global Legacy Boxing based in Toronto: http://globallegacyboxing.com/, they are rising as well.
Boxing is HUGE in the U.K. right now, U.K. promoters like Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren are making lots of money. Germany is a solid boxing country as well. Top Rank are making progress in China where some fights are seen by hundreds of millions of people (Zou Shimming fights). In Japan the number of good pro boxers in the small weight classes is growing all the time now.
Boxing is a true world sport. The soccer of combat sports. In boxing, you can start homeless and become a millionaire (see Manny Pacquiao). Boxing has the “buy low sell high model”, while the MMA culture is a culture of hobbyists. You can call boxing a third-world sport all you like, I’ve seen a lot of MMA fans make that case, it only shows your latent classicism and racism.
In the MMA world, you pay to play while in boxing you get paid to play.

Pride and K1 did, but the UFC’s shows out there destroy anything boxing puts up, not to mention there are still smaller mma promotions in Japan.
The UFC could be in Australia/N. Zealed 1x per year and they would still outdraw anything boxing put up. They just had two has been hw’s headline a fight that did over 1m gate. Boxing can only do those numbers with major stars.

Of those 8, how many were economically strong nations? All of them. Not to mention the biggest market by far. As opposed to boxing which mostly draws strong ratings in the 3rd world.
You are again creating delusions about Brazil being the only country, all of the countries I listed were bigger mma nations.
Wil says
No matter what, these were good ratings, and they were prelim ratings at that which means the final count will be higher. If Bellator is doing good ratings, excellent, they gimmick/old guy shows outperform even UFC on FS1 and FOX. What was even more impressive about this particular PBC show is it went head to head with the Final Four. On top of that, Theophane was almost a completely unknown fighter even to true fans. Had it been a more compelling matchup, the ratings would have been even higher.
And the most important thing, THE most important thing, the fights were damn good….Davis, Easter, Broner all registering knockouts and with the recent Blackwell near tragedy, glad to have seen that none of the fighters required hospitalization.
The Greatest says
Another victory for boxing i guess.
d says
No they weren’t good ratings Wil, considering who they had headlined and how much the fight card cost. Bellator pays out a fraction of what PBC does and gets better ratings with low profile fighters. What do you think that card cost to promote? I’d say at least 3m. They brought in less than that for the event. So it was actually a failure.
Broner’s numbers were even inflated higher because of his recent arrest and crazy behavior. Had it not been for that, the ratings would have even been lower.
Also, the circus shows on Bellator do not outdraw FS1 or FOX highest shows. Statistics will back up what I just said.
Another miserable failure for boxing more like.
Fight Fan says
D you got numbers on the show? Proof they lost money? The armory was packed so unless you do you’re again clowning yourself. Even my buffalo Wild wings chef knows this.

Sure they do, D. Sure they do, the gimmick Bellator shows pulled over 2 million average viewers, that has outperformed many a UFC show by ratings reported on this site.
If you are hoping for boxing demise, you really should keep your arteries clear and heart in excellent condition because its not going anywhere. Joshua and MArtin are fighting this weekend before a sold out crowd at the O2, which sold out in 90 seconds. Joshua is being paid over $11m and Martin over $8m……the O2 can hold 20,000 fans. This really doesnt fall in line with your general take on the sport. I get it though, you have an agenda, not exactly sure what it is or why though.
Also, in Bellator and UFC, and mma in general, the promotion itself makes more of the profit than the fighters. In boxing, the fighters make more of the profit than the promoters. Al Haymon is only worth 15m, his most successful fighter, Mayweather is worth close to 600m. Even Andre Berto is worth in the area of Haymon. So the expenses are not the same in both sports. MMA fighters are still paid peanuts in comparison to what boxers are paid. Even Tyrone Spong is concentrating on boxing due to the poor purses in both mma and Glory Kickboxing (as opposed to higher purses that were K1.) So bro, just relax, every good boxing show isnt a reason to tear it down. Boxing, mma, wrestling, kickboxing, bjj tournaments, UFC, Glory, WSOF, Bellator, One, Top Rank, Main Events, Roc Nation, Golden Boy, PBC, Warrior Boxing, Matchroom Boxing, Star Boxing, Saurland, K2, Showtime Boxing, HBO Boxing, etc etc….none of them are going anywhere.

The Japanese boxing scene is extremely strong right now, so much that many of their fighters have made waves on PBC, Showtime, HBO…etc. Takashi Uchiyama is universally recognized as the best Jr Lightweight in the world with big possible fights with Javier Fortuna, Francisco Vargas, Ramon Martinez, Orlando Salido, and if fighters like Russel, Santa Cruz, Lomachenko, and Walters rise in weight, that division will become the most stacked even in comparison to the Welterweights.

“Sure they do, D. Sure they do, the gimmick Bellator shows pulled over 2 million average viewers, that has outperformed many a UFC show by ratings reported on this site.”
Right and McGregor has defeated those gimmick shows, not to mention Cruz-Dillashaw did as well on FS1. So to be clear, Bellator’s biggest gimmick show did not outdraw the top FS1 UFC shows, nor has it outdrawn any UFC on FOX shows. That is also factoring in that more people tune into Spike than FS1. Spike is a more established brand.
“If you are hoping for boxing demise, you really should keep your arteries clear and heart in excellent condition because its not going anywhere.?If you are hoping for boxing demise, you really should keep your arteries clear and heart in excellent condition because its not going anywhere.”
Not hoping for its demise, but hoping to see it improve and go back to the days of the 80s where boxers actually fought and didn’t turn the bouts into track meets like Mayweather. Also, I never said it was dead, however its interest has declined dramatically.
” Joshua and MArtin are fighting this weekend before a sold out crowd at the O2, which sold out in 90 seconds. Joshua is being paid over $11m and Martin over $8m……the O2 can hold 20,000 fans. This really doesnt fall in line with your general take on the sport. I get it though, you have an agenda, not exactly sure what it is or why though.”
Uh, the sellout is meaningless unless you have a big gate number not to mention those purses are not possibly accurate and no one would actually believe that for a minute.
d says
“So the expenses are not the same in both sports. MMA fighters are still paid peanuts in comparison to what boxers are paid.”
This is completely false and delusional to believe. You are even contradicting yourself within the statements by ignoring your own point. How can the expenses be the same if one is paying bigger purses? Both the production and fighters costs are more in boxing. Although, you are delusional by saying the UFC pays their fighters peanuts, they do not pay their fighters ridiculous over-inflated purses that boxing does, which provides for more profit for them of course. The production costs are also more for HBO/Showtime and with whoever PBC uses as well.
” Even Tyrone Spong is concentrating on boxing due to the poor purses in both mma and Glory Kickboxing (as opposed to higher purses that were K1.) ”
Tyrone Spong is not a ranked mma fighter. He’s had a few fights and never impressed. He also demolished his leg. Kickboxing has never paid out well, which seeing how he is an elite striker, but not elite mma fighter, it would make more sense for him to consider boxing. You notice he left kickboxing to try mma. Had he done very well, he would have made a lot more money a lot quicker in mma. Undercard boxers make dirt.
PBC isn’t going anywhere??? According to their financial reports, they are going somewhere…..straight down the toilet.
d says
“The Greatest, outstanding numbers, Ive been on “staycation” for the better part of 2+ weeks from work and folks at work actually called me to talk about the fight and Broner challenging Mayweather. 1.3 million…..that sure cannot be denied.”
You don’t know much about what you are talking about. How much did this cost to produce? At least 3m. Had to be around 2m for the purses and at least another million for promotion/production. Where do you think 937k viewers gets you? You think those ratings will get them rights fees in the 4m range?? No way in hell. The UFC’s deal only pays them roughly 2m per show. and they draw better overall ratings, better ratings in the key demos, their production costs and purses are also less expensive. PBC needs much higher ratings with those caliber fighters.
This was not a good rating. They need to be drawing very big ratings considering their costs, much higher than the UFC, and in reality they can’t even match Bellator.
d says
Hahahaha. Topps does 10hrs of research and still misses the point, that mma is much bigger than boxing in N. Zealand.

Broner’s gates are horrible. Always have been. He can’t draw anything relevant. I wouldn’t be stunned if the gate was around 300k. UFC TUF finales and Bellator do bigger numbers.

Na, they will continue to ascend, the numbers back up my claims and invalidate yours. Boxing is a mess. The UFC/MMA is dominating them in every category ppv, gate, tv ratings, etc.
The UFC is setting records, so that would make it kind of tough for people to be losing interest also. They will have the top 3 ppvs this year in terms of buyrates and will at least double anything boxing puts up. PBC will also be out of business soon. Everyone in boxing is fleeing the US because no one cares about it here much anymore.
