MMA Fighting reports that Anderson Silva will claim that “sexual performance” medication was the cause for positive drug tests before and after UFC 183.
Silva and his attorneys will put on their defense on Thursday when Silva goes before the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Despite the positive drug tests, Silva claims that he did not knowingly take any kind of steroids. He will claim that he took sexual performance medication was part of the reason for the inaccurate drug tests. Specifically, he claims that the use of the sexual performance drug caused the finding of Drostanolone Metabolite.
Silva’s legal team is requesting no punishment for Silva.
Payout Perspective:
It will be interesting to see whether Silva’s strategy will work. The defense can be seen as embarrassing and credible simply because it is so extraordinarily private. His explanation does not account for the pre-fight questionnaire which addresses the types of supplements a fighter has taken. Since this is the first we have heard of Silva’s defense, we might assume the sex enhancement drug was not on the pre-fight questionnaire. Of course, if you recall the Manny Pacquiao situation prior to the Mayweather fight, this can be easily explained away. We shall see whether the commission buys the argument or takes a hard line with Silva.

Does anyone know if that’s even possible? A “sexual performance” drug causing a positive test for drostanolone? I’m asking out of ignorance here, I’m not too familiar with the specifics of steroids or steroid testing protocols.

There was a Canadian athlete who claimed to take an over the counter antihistamine during the Pan American Games in 1995, who was later exonerated. But that was a while ago.

It is an ongoing trend for ped abusers to use that claim. They are full of shit though.
He’s been using peds since the 90s literally. Chute Boxe were the worst abusers. Wanderlei, the Rua’s, Pele, Anderson, etc. The worst. They loved fighting in Pride with the lack of testing. He would have never beaten Jackson had it not been for his added helper.
Fight Fan says
None of those sex drugs they sell at supp shops should be containing steroids in them, this is just a desperate attempt. Most of them are just designed to increase blood flow etc.
BrainSmasher says
Even testosterone can be used a sexual performance drug. So there is a good chance a sexual performance drug can also be used as a performance enhancer for fighting. I believe this defense will not change a punishment by the commission. But will act only as a way to win public opinion and not come off as a cheater and restore his legacy.
mmaguru says
@BrainSmasher
That’s a great point. This could simply be a veil for the masses to consume and build up some doubt amongst those that wish to believe that Anderson is not guilty. They will need to prove this scientifically, which I think will be a tough when you look at the levels documented in his test results.
@d
Has there been any test results that demonstrate that Wanderlei or Mauricio have taken banned substances? I am aware of the incident where Wanderlei left prior to a test, but to my knowledge, neither guy was ever tested and failed. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m assuming this is your opinion and not a factual statement?
d says
mmaguru,
First off, literally running from a drug test is failing the test. He didn’t leave prior- the tester showed up and he left to avoid failing it, then came back, bullshit the guy and avoided him in his own gym. Also, he ADMITTED to taking diuretics which were illegal. Second, Shogun was clearly cheating- for years he wasn’t even drug tested because he was fighting in Pride, thus making it difficult to fail a test. His physique has altered drastically a number of times in the UFC clearly showing when he was on or off peds. How many times was this guy even randomly tested? Was he ever? I wouldn’t be surprised if he was. Noticeably for his last fight when the new testing kicked in, his physique looked soft as shit out of nowhere.
It is also of my opinion that OJ Simpson murdered his wife and Ron Goldman. He was found not guilty in a court of law, and was exonerated by our legal system, however anyone with a thought in their brain would realize he was guilty. Just like anyone who knows anything about mma would realize that those two were blatant cheaters.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, in mmaguru’s world, it’s a horse.
BrainSmasher says
I think the most telling about Shogun was not only how soft he got in the UFC but his cardio and fight pace. He was agressive and Active in Pride. From day one in the UFC he was passive and still gassed even with a slow fight pace. When Forrest Griffen breaks you there is problems! The mental effect of being on whatever he was on also is noticeable. He was a very confident person in Oride and in the UFC he has a journeyman attitude of just trying to hold on and get as many checks as possible. Guys don’t forget why they started using PE’s and the short comings they are trying to cover up. One they lose their security blanket of steroids. They are not the same person. You saw this with Overeem. Once he was clean or cleaner. He was easy to break. He mentally knew he was in trouble and expected to lose. So he was easy to break. Where as the juiced version had no quit in him.
mmaguru says
@d,
Sorry, without any actual proof, it is simply your opinion. You are accusing someone of a crime that they were not charged with, which is libelous. If you want to state it as an opinion, do so, but don’t state it as fact because you have worked it out in your mind and it has to be so. So let’s admit that your claims are simply opinion, not based on any factual evidence and move on.
@BrainSmasher,
It is more than likely the case that many fighters take illegal substances to enhance their ability to fight, recover, or heal an injury, but until they are caught doing so via legitimate testing (not simply hearsay), I will reserve judgement on the fighter and state that this is just an opinion on the matter.
Now back to the case at hand, has there been any update on the hearing today?
d says
@mmaguru, you are a fucking idiot. First off, of the two you challenged me on- one of them CONFESSED!! Wanderlei Silva openly admitted he took diuretics which were a violation of the NSAC drug policy. He failed the test also by running away from it. That is a failure. Nothing opinion based what so ever. As for Shogun, it isn’t opinion. I can provide evidence based on his performance/physique. Just because a sanctioning body hasn’t caught found his tests to be failures- (he may have only been drug tested a few times, and was probably never randomly tested in his career up until maybe his last fight), doesn’t mean there is no evidence.
Let’s just acknowledge you are a stupid fucking idiot and move on.
mmaguru says
@d,
Rise above your trolling ways and accusations. Maybe someone would take you serious otherwise. There is no need to get personal. Your opinion can count, but you have to present it in a meaningful non-biased way.
I guess nothing new from the hearing as of yet.
mmaguru says
No surprise, he was suspended for one year by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) and also lost his win (no contest), win bonus and 30% of the purse.
1 year plus 380K fines is a pretty huge. I wonder if he received any PPV bonuses that would offset some of those losses?
d says
mmaguru,
Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.
My opinion isn’t biased. I have no resentment for them outside of the fact that they are blatant cheats. Your opinions are blatantly biased though seeing how you lied about what Meltzer said to feed some moronic troll’s bull shit argument.
mmaguru says
@d
Rise above your trolling ways. You seem like you may have some opinions that matter. No one will take you seriously the way you post. Sorry. Statements like “don’t dish it out..” sounds like something a teenager would say in a school playground. We are all adults here with varying degrees of intelligence and knowledge. If you are as smart as you think you are, than act like it and stop this nonsense. Stick to the discussion at hand without making rude remarks going forward. I have faith in you and good luck.
d says
mmaguru, I would offer you the same advice, you are in full blown troll denial though. Passive aggressive trolling now.
No one could take you seriously after they read your statements completely lying about what someone said in an interview and then continuing to deny it.
I stick to the discussion at hand AND make rude remarks within the same statements. I enjoy proving boxing trolls like you wrong with facts and then insulting you on top of it. The insults do not invalidate anything I’ve said. You are just in denial because I proved your dumbass wrong. Haha.
mmaguru says
@d
Rise above your trolling ways. You are a better person than what you post on this forum. Good luck.
d says
@mmaguru, look up the word hypocrisy in the dictionary.
Good luck.

@d
You are a troll. Give it up and become a bigger man. I think you can do it.
d says
mmaguru, you need to get out of troll denial. Some day, you may want to come clean.
