UFC McGregor bio indicates UFC 189 did 1M PPV buys

July 24, 2015 by Jason Cruz 38 Comments

UFC is reporting that UFC 189 drew 1 million PPV buys according to the biography of Conor McGregor on the company’s web site.  MMA Junkie noted the information on McGregor’s bio.

Via UFC.com:

The fight attracted a record 16,019 fans to the MGM Grand Garden Arena, plus a $7.2-million live gate and 1 million pay per view buys, proving McGregor’s sizable drawing power. Some 3,000 Irish fans converged on Las Vegas and left deliriously happy.

UFC 189 would be the first PPV hitting 1 million PPV buys since UFC 168 which featured Silva-Weidman II and Tate-Rousey in December 2013. Prior to that, you’d have to look to July 2010 and UFC 116 (Lesnar-Carwin) for a PPV to strike 1 million PPV buys.

Payout Perspective:

If the PPV number is correct, it shows that the ratings from the UFC 189 Prelims were an inconsistent indicator of PPV success. UFC 189 Prelims on FS1 drew only 847,000 viewers.  The televised Prelims usually entice “on the fence” fans to purchase the PPV.  Here, one might conclude that people already were set to buy the PPV because of McGregor.  This would be great for the UFC as it has a confirmed PPV star in the new interim Featherweight champion.

It’s interesting that the information on PPV buys was somewhat buried in the bio of McGregor and not officially announced by the UFC.  Usually, when organizations do well business-wise there is some release about the information.  For instance, Bellator’s tentpole events 131 and 138 ratings were announced immediately when received as the company was happy with the great ratings.  Here, no official announcement. We shall see if we get an official announcement soon.

Have to see what Meltzer says but he did say it was looking like 800-1.1 mill.

Thats awesome for UFC and McGregor, dude is the biggest new star in combat sports. Him and Ronda are biggest new stars, once Floyd and Manny are gone the top two stars in combat sports will be them.

Great to see, McGregor/Aldo will be even bigger.

Even though, I agree not to take the word of promoters for ppv numbers, it never stopped Sal from taking the word of Arum or Ellerbe. I guess its only true when career sociopathic scumbags like Arum and Ellerbe make those claims.

I’ll wait for Meltzer’s final tallies to come out, but won’t be surprised at all if it did hit 1m given his statements and estimates surrounding the ppv.

Chris, in terms of ppv, McGregor is bigger than both boxers now. Mayweather/Pac can’t do those numbers with low profile opponents. Mayweather won’t even fight Berto on ppv, because he knows it will bomb. Pacquaio did 350k buys with Algieri and 475k with Rios.

Arum is a worm and more of a scumbag then Dana, dana is an amateur girl scout
in comparison. Boxing numbers are way more accurate, more people involved and most events are co promoted by numerous entities. besides Boxing has no reason to fucking lie day and night like the ufc does! The UFC cant tell the truth about what day it is. And why would they have to pay morons like D and others to post and reinforce all the lies???????? Conor is the flavor of the week, there will be no discussion of him in 2 years!!!! Short excitement span like the UFC and 99% of its fighters!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Boxing numbers are more accurate according to a boxing paid troll like you, you stupid fuck.

Here’s the difference: The UFC at least has someone calling them out on their bullshit if they throw out an inflated number or leak it through Iole. Meltzer has contradicted them tons of times. On the other hand, boxing at this point has no one. Rafael used to, but it is pretty evident that ESPN scolded him for it last time when he said Espinoza, etc were full of shit on the Gayweather-Guerrero numbers. Arum/Ellerbe/Schaeffer etc call each other liars on ppv numbers all the time. Someone’s gotta be lying, right, idiot?

McGregor will be around for quite some time- whether or not he is selling like he is now, I doubt it. But if he beats Aldo- (which he very well may), he’ll still be big 2 years from now, even if he loses the title.

    You are such an idiot.

Boxing is a real sport the UFC is Dana’s imagination and nothing else. Talk about a gullible moron, go look in the mirror of the mens room that you clean. bahahaha I could write for 20 min of all the BIG NEW UFC STARS that amounted to dog shit and that are here today and gone tomorrow. Conor will be done in less then 2 years! wait and see

Is 1 million ppv’s good? yes but this was suppose to be their biggest fight in a decade. It would have done 1.3 with aldo in it. very good but really shows how limited the UFC’s ceiling is. They promoted this shit like hell. Boxing did 4.4 million ppv buys with fuckin welterweights. 2.5 million with mayweather and canelo. if they had a bunch of stars they could do 1.8 million ppv buys consistantly. canelo vs cotto definately beats this.

    Fagbusiness,

1m isn’t good considering what they put into it? So you have some hard figures or other evidence that can prove this wasn’t a good number? We also don’t even know if it hit 1m, but it was probably close considering Meltzer’s numbers.

Notice Sampson’s own source words it as follows:

“Mayweather, SHO/CBS in Talks For Contract Extension?” Notice that pesky question mark at the end of the statement.

The only way Mayweather comes back is if he takes on a series of non contenders in just low risk fights and they won’t be on ppv. He will never fight a worthy opponent again. He doesn’t want to risk it. That’s what his potential contract will involve. His father even leaked that info by saying he should retire, rather than waste time with these joke opponents.

Watch his fight on CBS bomb big time in the ratings.

I’ll wait for Dave Meltzers’ estimates… Quinton Jackson mentioned a while ago that when it comes to PPV buys the UFC has a habit of telling the media one thing and privately telling fighters another thing, whatever works to their advantage in any particular case–whether it’s higher or lower, but one thing is sure, they never release the actual official numbers.

UFC 189 is what The Fight of the Century hoped to be. Instead, most of the viewers found it boring and likely didn’t attract much needed fans from the younger demographic, which MMA now rules in the important US market.

UFC 189, on the other hand, was considered the greatest event by many and set up an even bigger fight (Aldo VS McGregor), helping to attract even more fans and continuing its growth.

Future of MMA continues to look good.
