PBC on Spike TV draws 869,000 viewers

March 16, 2015 by Jason Cruz 46 Comments

Television By Numbers and Sports TV Ratings report that the debut of Premier Boxing Champions on Friday night on SpikeTV drew an average viewership of 869,000 viewers. It received a 0.3 rating in the adult demo of 18-34.

According to Spike, PBC drew 1 million viewers between 10:45pm-11:15pm ET which was during the Josesito Lopez-Andre Berto fight.  PBC was to air from 9-11pm but there was a 20 minute overrun for the main event.  The event average made it the “most watched boxing event on Friday nights in 8 years” according to Spike.  The highlights from Friday’s fights have been viewed 1.5 million times between PBC’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The event was the debut of Spike’s revamped Friday Night programming featuring combat sports. PBC featured Lopez versus Berto in the main event. Berto won via 6th round TKO.

The event drew 869,000 viewers over the 2 hours and 20 minutes airing on SpikeTV. It did run opposite a lot of College Basketball as the conference tournaments were in full swing. Notably, the ACC conference tournament game between Duke and Notre Dame on ESPN was the highest-rated sports cable program on Friday night as it received 2.617M viewers for a game that started at 9:50pm on the east coast. Preceding that game on ESPN, North Carolina and Virgina drew 2.054M viewers at 7:00pm.

Per TV By Numbers, the highest-rated show on cable on Friday the 13th was Gold Rush on the Discovery Channel which drew 3.274M viewers.

If you are a boxing cynic, the lead-in for PBC, Cops, drew a higher rating in its 30 minutes preceding boxing with an average viewership over 1 million viewers. Then again, Cops usually does great ratings and in defense of boxing the event was over 2 hours.

Payout Perspective:

Overall, it was a very good showing and the fights were entertaining. Perhaps the best fight was Arreola-Harper although it was not aesthetically pleasing. With college basketball games going on during the fights, it may have taken some of the audience away from PBC.  Based on the information provided, it appears that PBC has gained a sufficient amount of buzz with its promotion and marketing of its events. We will see if it can improve on the number when it returns on April 24th to SpikeTV.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! TOILET SHIT NUMBERS!!!!! Bring out the spin boxing trolls! 0 for 2 for PBC!!!

Their ratings are Bellator numbers. HAHAHAHA!!!

What’s the payroll for a Bellator card like this? Maybe 500k? For Boxing, it is well over 2m just for the fighters, not to mention the other massive overhead of promotion and buying time.

This experiment may actually die quicker than I thought if they keep throwing up shit numbers like this.

    HAHAHAHAHA!!!

This man talking about payroll like we care about how much these fighters get paid lmao … Yes we know boxers get paid well compare to other combat sports even middle pack fighters in good A side in front of them bank well who cares! It’s great start for spike and peaking to 1 mil during the main event also good … Plus all 3 fights were entertaining and Saturday night card fight of the night kovalev vs pascal will once again be another 1.1 million or higher televised … Then you getting matthysse vs Ruslan canelo vs kirkland peterson vs garcia schedule is pretty great this year who cares about payroll smh

Hey Jesus boy, that isn’t why I’m pointing it out genius, my point is you can’t sustain massive losses and continue to have fights like this. The idea for someone running a promotion is to at some point in time turn a profit or else, your business eventually collapses. It is a horrible sign when your debut numbers on both network and cable tv fail miserably to hit the numbers you require to make money in the long run.

Also, middle of the pack boxers get paid dogshit. MMA undercard fighters get paid more.

    Nice try genius.

Unlike MMA fans I dont live a life of lies. These numbers are really bad. Sure its ok compared to other programming but Boxing on basic cable should do between. 1.6 to 2.5 million views per show. These are UFC numbers. Fuckin pathetic. UFC averages about 900k views for Fight Night shows. If it wasnt for about 4 shows that scored higher they would average about 600k per show. Thats why I dont understand why an mma fan would laugh at this. You want to talk about expenses? Here’s an expense: 525 million. Now pay up bitch.

NBC’s numbers were strong and only need to increase by about 300k views to be a hit show. sadly these Spike numbers are not. Matching UFC numbers is truly embarrassing. I’m not use to it. makes me feel sad. 1.8-2.5 million per show on spike is what any combat sport should get.

D- stop living a life of lies. Berto is middle of the pack and he made 800k last fight. Josesito is middle of the pack and made 450k. These guys arent even ranked in the top ten. At some point you have to stop lying. Frank Mir once made 40k to fight Nogera. Cmon, the fighter pay debate is over expcept in your mind.

NBC won the night in the 18-49 demo and beat all but two stations that had popular shows on. Its already a hit. if that show just gets 300k more viewers for its average and peak it will stay on tv for years to come.

Haha. FB, your world revolves around lies. Every statement you make is either a flat out lie, cherry picked statistic or just an overall ignorant comment. You are an idiot.

Oh and by the way, those aren’t ufc numbers, those are BELLATOR numbers and yes, considering the cost of the PBC promotion, that is pathetic! The UFC is on FS1 cable which is an upstart channel where their overall ratings are terrible, but the UFC and NASCAR numbers are the only thing keeping them going. By the way, in the 18-49 demo, the UFC numbers are still strong, unlike PBC boxing which just did a massive .3 in that demo. HAHAHA!! Atrocious.

“You want to talk about expenses? Here’s an expense: 525 million. Now pay up bitch.” HAHAHA!! Hey idiot, when you gross 600m per year, that isn’t too big of a deal. Let me know when Top Rank, GB, Mayweather or anyone else in boxing generates a fraction of that. Not to mention of course they make pennies on the dollar from their fights(unlike the ufc who doesn’t have the overhead costs boxing does).

“NBC’s numbers were strong and only need to increase by about 300k views to be a hit show. sadly these Spike numbers are not. Matching UFC numbers is truly embarrassing. I’m not use to it. makes me feel sad. 1.8-2.5 million per show on spike is what any combat sport should get.”

Delusions. This was a monumental failure, because when the numbers settle in, they will drop considerably. Not to mention there is millions of dollars in overhead per event and they are taking losses expecting big ratings to pay off in the long run. The ratings were horrible and Haymon knows it. He has to pray something drastically different will happen and it is hard to believe it will considering they had big names on the debut.

“D- stop living a life of lies. Berto is middle of the pack and he made 800k last fight. Josesito is middle of the pack and made 450k. These guys arent even ranked in the top ten. At some point you have to stop lying. Frank Mir once made 40k to fight Nogera. Cmon, the fighter pay debate is over expcept in your mind”

You either can’t read, didn’t read, are flat out retarded or a combination of the 3. Plus, you are a professional liar. Berto is a top name in boxing. He is a headliner which is what he was doing in that fight. Where did I comment that headliners are underpaid in boxing? They are overpaid. Frank Mir never made 40k for a fight with Nog. At UFC 92, he made 90k plus probably had ppv points in his contract not to mention a signing bonus seeing how he was in his 3rd ufc contract. Why are you such a compulsive liar?

I also, specifically said the undercard fighters are paid better in mma. I’ve seen boxers on major ppvs make as low as 2k on the main card of a fight. You’ll never see a ufc fighter now make less than 8k on card and that would include free tv fights which have more fights on the card than boxing as well. Haha.

“NBC won the night in the 18-49 demo and beat all but two stations that had popular shows on. Its already a hit. if that show just gets 300k more viewers for its average and peak it will stay on tv for years to come.”

Yeah, when you pay millions and you generate a fraction of the ratings you expect to get, you’ve got a colossal failure on your hands. You are going to be very sad when this shitty idea gets cancelled. But I would think you are going to be more upset when your new nickname kicks in come the end of 2015. HAHA!! Idiot.

D is a moron and needs to realize that Berto vs Joseito really means nothing in the boxing world. Actually Berto is mostly made fun of for his swift decline in the sport.
Berto is a middle of the pack boxer and he made more than almost all UFC fighters ever.

I dont think PBC really plans on staying on Spike for that long. Its just to promote the name but who knows. Spike isnt really that popular of a channel and the only boxers theyll get are ones like Berto.

Hell Andre Berto vs Victor Ortiz will do good numbers on spike.
Fighters like that should be on that channel.

When has the UFC ever had a fight bring in $150m in revenue?

Hey idiot, when will you learn Mayweather’s fights are not reflective of the rest of boxing.

Boxing is the senior tour. Their fans and fighters are seniors. MMA isn’t a bunch of old timers.

Boxing has to pay to get on a network. MMA ppv numbers are bigger than boxing for years now. Their ratings are better on tv. The key demo is more interested in mma. Boxing is going to drastically plummet when Mayweather retires in the fall.

FB, your first set of numbers are incoherent. They make no sense. The UFC on FOX’s debut and follow up show destroyed PBC’s numbers on NBC. I guess that doesn’t count though because it proves your argument wrong.

I love this- Jones- Cormier was the biggest fight of the year which hit 800k. Out of 3 ppvs so far. There are 2 bigger fights on the horizon later this year. You are also exaggerating the number of ppv buys for Pac-Mayweather. That is highly unlikely it hits near 4m buys. It will probably be more like 3m. And again, that is the only fight boxing has and Mayweather will be retired in the fall and Pacquaio soon there after. Then you are really going to be sad when those ppv numbers plummet.

The UFC got way higher numbers in the 18-49 demo for their first two FOX shows than that turd floater on NBC that the PBC put up.

“Why doesnt anyone go to bad left hook and insult Boxing. Um lets see, because there a re few MMA fans, they also arent stupid enough t compare the success of the 2 sports and in all honesty no one even knows that website. there are much more popular ones. ”

More like boxing fans are insanely insecure and hate the reality that their sport lost the market share.

Its just a back and forth dick swinging contest to see who can shit on the other sport more.

How about this, you are all fucktard idiots who are an embarrassment to each sports fanbase. You people care more about shitting on another sport than you do the actual fights.

Heres the truth, both boxing and mma are niche sports and always will be. There are a handful of fighters/fights that cross over but thats about it.

Its not a competition, neither sport gets anything out of the other sport doing bad. Boxing’s been around forever, as niche as they are now it it still more accepted than mma which has only been around for 20 years, really like 10 years since it really took off in US.

    Both sports have problems.

What’s funny is in no way, shape or form is the UFC business going to crumble. MMA is here to stay and it makes you nuts because you realize it took your sport’s marketshare away. 20 years ago, combat sports was dominated by boxing. Now, they don’t even control the N. American market.

You also hate the fact that mma is much closer to real fighting and boxing is not. Not to mention if you put the two in an actual fight together regardless of the surface, the boxer is getting his ass kicked because he can’t stop a takedown.

Take all the tools away that a striker would use to destroy an mma guy in a real fight. a kickboxer would destroy an mma guy in a 2 minute conflict on concreate. axe murder silva pulled guard on concreate against sonnen and had to pull out of the fight because of back pain. yeah real world. going to the ground is the most moronic thing you can do in a fight especially with multiple attackers and weapons. D is mad because he knows the dry humping league was created for people who cant stand and fight like men. people dry hump now because the dry humping league is always in their living room.

Fightbusiness, there were no rules for the first 2 ufcs. What happened? Who won? The grapplers you fucking idiot. You are over 21 years behind the curve. No surprises.

Your analysis is of a very slow witted individual from the early to mid 90s who was clueless as to how real fighting would go down. What is most alarming is this was so long ago with tens of thousands of fights to prove what works or not in a real fight and you still don’t grasp this concept. If you want to talk pure street fights go watch the “Gracies in Action” tapes where they filmed themselves in full contact no rules street fights against martial artists with striking backgrounds and the result was always the same- the grappler won. Pathetic how you are living in the pre ufc level education.

I wasn’t talking about a fight with multiple attackers. But if you want to talk about a lawless level street fight, it is beyond moronic to try to fist fight someone in a crazy fight like that because someone could just pull out a gun and shoot you.

Fightbusiness is just mad because he realizes these pussy boxers, he thinks are tough would get destroyed in a real street fight and those ten oz gloves and rules protect them from reality. He really loves it when they dry hump from a standing position and caress each other’s neck. HAHAHAHA!!! You can’t take it you little homo. Your boxers grind up against each other while necking eachother in the clinch. I always see Mayweather try to grab his opponent’s ass as well because he is a homo. Its at times like this when I love thinking about 49 year old Ray Mercer knocking a 35 year old former champ out cold in ten seconds. All a Boxer needs is 4-5 MMA fights under his belt (2 years) and then he will beat the shit out of 90% of these guys. No style wins 100% of the time. The Gracies were dominate for what 5 years? wow what a reign of terror. Shamrock pulled out a draw within 1 year. This shit isnt hard to learn. Anthony Davis just has a purple belt and is doing well. The Gracie challenges were on a padded service by the way. Sakurabu beat those bitches down and then they just went away. BJJ was effective for 5 years because people were in disbelief someone would learn how to choke people and break their arms. no one ever thought about taking it that far. Its ok to learn if your a small person and need this to survive but a supposed tough guy shouldnt brag about knowing how to dry hump. Chuck Liddel ue to stuff these bitches take downs. stay off the ground and fight like men.
