UFC Fight Night 59 draws 1.7 overnight rating

January 19, 2015 by Jason Cruz 22 Comments

Sunday night’s UFC Fight Night 59 drew an overnight rating of 1.7 and it is projected to be the most-watched/highest rated show in FS1 history according to Fox Sports.

UFC Fight Night 59 occurred on the same day as NFL’s Championship Sunday.  The NFC Championship game on Fox posted a 29.1 overnight rating which is the highest-rated, most watched show since Super Bowl 48.  The peak was a 33.8 from 6-6:30. The AFC Championship drew a 24.2 overnight rating and was off from last year’s AFC game likely due to the blowout.

Despite power outages in the Seattle area due to storms, Seattle had a 51.9 rating.  According to local information, more than 1.85 million viewers in Seattle area watched Green Bay-Seattle.  Interesting enough, Seattle (3.9 rating) was the top market watching UFC Fight Night 59 per Newsday’s Mark LaMonica.  Oklahoma City (3.2) and Phoenix (3.2) were next.  In these cities, it looks like the UFC promos helped.

Payout Perspective:

Actual viewership numbers will likely come out Wednesday due to the U.S. holiday.  But news of a 1.7 rating is great considering the concern of it running on Championship Sunday.  The additional promotion including McGregor on sister network FX, the ESPN car wash, the “Embedded” series and the constant promotion during the NFL playoffs culminating with spots during the NFC Championship game definitely helped.  The UFC does not do this for any of its Fight Nights but McGregor is an exception.  Should the UFC do more to leverage it’s most talented (or most marketable) stars more in this fashion?  It’s hard to say that every fighter could be as media savvy as McGregor.  It’s also hard to foresee whether the UFC and its partner Fox would be willing to invest as much time and money in a fighter as it did in McGregor.

Mcgregor looked great! even though he fought a hand picket opponent, a journey man who needed a stool to even be close. I say he could be the new GSP without a doubt .As far as him beating Aldo, who knows?, I say he can squeeze out a worked decision. Too bad it took the clowns at the UFC 2 years to promote another fighter with a real buzz! The rest of the show was a bunch of filler and bullshit, thank god for fast forward. Its like one big advertisement over and over, then they take 20 min to get a god dam fight started! WTF!!!! That Buffer guy is a complete fuck stick who needs to go to the WWE or be some strip club DJ, sooo immature and annoying as fuck! JEEEZ give it a break! I guess it appeals to the 13 year old fans!

Lol “that buffer guy”. Way to discredit any opinion you have here and show you are a clueless noob. Conner will beat Aldo. His toughest fight stylistically would be someone like Chad Mendez.

Aldo is a good stylistic matchup for McGregor, but let’s not get carried away. Jose is an ass kicker. Only guy I’m confident beating him that floats around at that weight in Pettis.

    That’s ESPN

    Here is HBO:

The highest rated boxing match of 2014 was Chavez Jr – Vera. It drew 1.39m avg viewers which was less than McGregor’s fight.

1.7 is a great number, lets be real. Showtime had a heavyweight fight sat I bet they did half of that.

1.7 is a good number but comparing it to Boxing’s ratings is comparing apples to oranges because Boxing is on a PREMIUM network. Showtime only has access to 22 million viewers. HBO 28 million. Fox sports 90 million. Boxing on NBC will be a much fairer comparison.

Fightbusiness, boxing is also on cable. Their fights on ESPN did nowhere near a 1.7 and ESPN has a wider audience. Nice try.

The fights on ESPN for the most part are up and comers.
With the exception of Klitschko, who will do good numbers facing Jennings in April and not some scrub from Australia.

Whats funny about the Klitschko situation is that he did over double the numbers on HBO then he did on ESPN.
Reasoning is that is wasnt promoted at all and it was at noon and the opponent was trash.
Klitschko said he wants to face Briggs after this fight and I bet that does great numbers.
Fury vs Wilder will be a monster fight and the winner will face Klitschko in what will be a huge fight.
The HW division is looking to have a great year.

ESPN has never spent million hyping a fighter like he was Ali lmao! Showtime and HBO boxing are sports institutions FS1 is Mad magazine in comparison. DW and the girls at the ufc would kill their own kids to be on pay cable!! FS1 is the minor league of sports TV and everyone knows it. The ufc can only get third rate tv deals and the ratings suck and the sponsors aren’t paying shit! Russian TV??? laughing my fucking ass off!!!!!!

    SALDAQUEEF!!!

Mad magazine kicked the sports institutions ass that night. Haha. Bob Arum, Richard Schaeffer, Oscar, and every other boxing promoter would kill to have a legitimate network deal. Instead they have to suck dick to pay for a deal on NBC.

Klitschko has made more money because of charity, not because of the value of his fight cards. He can’t even sell a ppv. Go research how his negotiations went with David Haye. Klitschko demanded that Haye give him a piece of his ppv contract with sky tv. The reason?? Klitschko’s tv contracts pay him jack shit compared to the ppv. Hahaha. He has to get lesser known star’s to give their market’s ppv points. Pathetic.

    You are a moron.
