ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports that Saturday night’s HBO Boxing After Dark featuring Terence Crawford scored an average of only 836,000 viewers of its subscribers with a peak at 936,000. The event also include the replay of Manny Pacquiao-Chris Algieri from the week before which scored an average of 904,000 with a peak of 1.120 million viewers.
The other live fight of the night, Evgeny Gradovich and Jayson Velez drew more viewers than the feature. It averaged 865,000 viewers with a peak of 1.033 million. Crawford defeated Raymundo Beltran and Gradovich and Velez fought to a draw.
As is traditional for HBO/Showtime boxing events, the ratings were given for the specific fights and not on the event as a whole.
Payout Perspective:
The event did go up against the big Auburn-Alabama game (which drew 13.5 million viewers) and other rivalry college football games. Rafael points out the fact that the main event occurred late for east coast viewers which may have impacted the draw. Still, the number is poor considering the event also included the PPV replay. Moreover, Crawford drew 1.2M viewers for his fight this summer. As one of the fighters that could (and should) carry the torch for boxing post-Mayweather/Pacquiao, the ratings are disappointing. Yet, the opening fight did better ratings than Crawford.

Considering how disappointing & lopsided the Pacquiao/Aligieri main event was then this is to be expected. Plus the PPV itself wasn’t even that publicized in the states, so that one will most likely hit lower than expected numbers as well.

It’s unfortunate because Crawford is such a good fighter, but I think he will continue to build his fan base if he continues to perform like he has this year. Frankly, getting almost a million views on HBO isn’t bad for a fighter who didn’t take a step up in competition until this year, but yeah, it could be better.

Terrence Crawford is not that great. He doesnt have much power. People are into this guy alittle too much. Pac vs Algeri’s PPV numbers are reportedly horrible. I put it ALL on Algeri. NO ONE knew who this guy was. When the fight was signed in April I really thought it was an April fool’s day joke. Pac vs Danny Garcia easily does over 800k buys. Boxing really needs to stop having fights at midnight. I have been saying this for years. Main events should never take place later than 10pm east coast time. Forget what self centered west coast fans say. Are they really not going to tune in and watch Cotto vs Canelo because it would be on at 7pm? 80% of the country is located in the east coast or central anyway. what mainstream sport is consistantly on this late anyway
Jack Torrance says
Crawford is pretty boring..
Nuff said.

Pac is done unless he fights Floyd or maybe 1 or 2 other fighters. They already made their money off of this guy so they don’t give a fuck. They are trying to keep Pac from getting knocked out so they can get him one or tow more big fights. I say they drag out a Floyd vs Manny 3 fight trilogy that will make boxing history in revenue and purse. Both Pac and Floyd are business men so they know how to play the game. Since when is 1 million views bad?

Macau casinos pay a lot for pacman to fight there…rios fight last year got low ppv vs pac but bradley fight in the u.s. Got a lot of ppv…
So why would arum sacrifice u.s. Ppv? Because asian high rollers even chinese govt officials gamble big in macau…also no taxes for pacman in macau…las vegas taxes is 30 percent

Wow. Where are all of the boxing trolls on here now? 300k buys from the second biggest star in boxing? Pathetic.
Tops can spin it anyway he likes to, the truth is this fight bombed. US ppv is where the money is at, and this fight shit its pants.

Yea shity numbers I agree. Shitty numbers for Boxing but un heard of numbers for UFC! Lets compare Pac mans PPV record against any UFC’s single name draw. Also name me a UFC fighter that has had the longevity of Pac man. Name a UFC fighter with a 57 5 and 2 record. Also name a UFC fighter thats lost 2 out his last 5 fights and still does 300 k plus a million pay TV views. Also funny how pac man still makes more than all the UFC fighters combined in one year,, yea real shitty. Fuck Tards! Please post when a UFC fighter makes over a million bucks off of a fight purse, not all the other alleged fight money bullshit. Wait till Pac Floyd 100’s of millions next
The Greatest says
Hopkins-Kovalev did over 1.33mil viewers a few weeks back and so did GGG vs Rubio.
But Cotto/Canelo will get 1m ppvs next year and Pac/May will get over 4mil.
Eat dicks for days “D”
FightBusiness says
d- Boxing trolls dont make excuses these numbers are in fact pathetic. Would you ever hear a UFC fan say that? No they would say “we were going up against bowling on ESPN or the sugar bowl on ABC.” I put most of this on Algeri however. Pac vs Danny garcia does 800k. Poor numbers though.
d says
Hahaha!!! Look at them all squirm.
Funny to see the gayest is back.
d says
Fightbusiness, all you have to do is look above and you can see boxing fans making excuses. You’ve got boxing fans on this site that hate mma that are so dedicated to making excuses it is unreal. Both fans make excuses. Pacquaio isn’t the draw he once was and the ppv climate isn’t what it once was when he was turning out a million plus per event.
d says
Saldaqueef compares apples to zebras. He smells and looks like shit. He has the mental capacity of a field mouse. He knows zero about either sport involved in this topic.
Diego says
300k is crap. I thought between 400-500k would be bad, but expected. In the 300s is lower than I expected, though maybe not lower than Arum expected considering the lack of promo for this fight.
Crawford’s last two fights have been very good and exciting. He’s been protected for years, so it’s going to take him some time to shake off the image of a safe, boring fighter, but he’s going about it the right way.
Jesus is coming says
It’s all to the fact main event starting close to 1 am!!! I guarantee that won’t happen ever again ….. I knew handful people that just dvr it it was so damn late … Ratings has been great lately … And next year schedule is looking amazing already !
Saldathief says
D has no info to add or interesting commentary or opinion just medicated dribble. We still dont have the last 2 ufc ppv numbers. Why is that????? Even with these shit numbers and less ppv events then the ufc boxing doubles ufc in 2014. Bahahaha
d says
No info to add? I added a link you stupid fuck! Go back and read it.
You can’t add. You are seriously retarded. What is really funny is that boxing totally bombed in terms of ppv as well in 2014. If it weren’t for an apocalyptic collapse in terms of injuries to nearly every major ppv they had, they would have easily beaten boxing this year. Boxing will not even come close to doubling mma in ppv buys this year, you don’t know how to do basic math. HBO/Showtime boxing didn’t even hit 4m buys this year idiot and they’ve had more ppvs this year than they have had in years, not to mention with major stars that now apparently can’t even break 300k buys. Hahaha. If Anderson Silva or GSP hit that low when they were 1 and 2 in the ufc, the boxing fruitcakes like you would be having a field day. You just can’t accept the reality which is that you are a moron Mr. Da Queef who smells and looks like shit.
