Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer (subscription recommended) reported that UFC 177 which featured T.J. Dillashaw defending his bantamweight championship against late replacement Joe Soto netted an estimated 125,000 PPV buys.
The numbers are more than most had expected considering that Soto replaced Renan Barao the day before the fight. It’s the second lowest output this year but considering the circumstances, the reported number is a pleasant surprise.
Going into the Saturday of UFC 177, there was concern that it would beat UFC 174 for lowest PPV buy rate in years.
Payout Perspective:
I was of the opinion that this number would never come out due to the potential for a disastrous PPV number. The Google metrics that many go by in anticipating a buy rate were non-existent. However, if correct, the 125,000 PPV buys reflects that there is a base (as discussed by Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on their podcast) audience that will order UFC PPVs regardless of the fights on the card. Realistically, the advertised card rivaled a Fight Night card with the exception of a title fight.
Saldathief says
This is a disastrous number!! Everybody has become numb to pathetic ppv buys! Make all the excuses you want and try to justify with complete bullshit! Are you fucking kidding me? The only thing this reflects, to anyone with half a brain, is that the base fan has dwindled and is continuing to dwindle across the board. 100k is this new 500k
Diego says
This should not have been a PPV. I think if the UFC go to the well too many times with watered down PPVs even that 125k of hardcore fans will stop buying.
Logical says
Although Meltzer is a reliable source given that he knows many people inside the PPV business, it’s still better for him to put a positive spin given all the bullying he has been taking from Dana lately–along with his rants & threats on removing credentials & black listing media that is negative blah blah blah. That 125k number is terrible, but worst of all, he is probably being generous in that estimation so I wouldn’t be surprised if the real number is actually much much lower.

HahahahAhaha….fastest declining sport

The NFL can put on more games in ONE weekend than the UFC can put on the ENTIRE year… The NFL can run for 25 or 26 weeks…
The PPV will get even more watered down… the UFC needs ALOT more product… I think they will create even more divisions and water down each card alot more… Get ready for the Super Flyweight division featuring midets stomping midets..

Sal spewing more of his idiotic bullshit. Late replacement for a 135lb title fight. No one expected this to do anything. Sal sucks dick.
All the homo trolls are in full blast. They forget the fact that they make sure to check out mma numbers obsessively, proving how popular the sport is.

SalDaQueef on ufc 178: “Second lowest gate for money, but if you add inflation it was the lowest take at the gate at MGM ever for ufc.”
UFC 178 ……….2.2 m dollar gate
UFC 34 MGM Nov. 2nd 2001…….$502k gate
UFC 36 MGM, March 22nd 2002……$898k gate
UFC 40 MGM Nov. 22nd 2002……..$1.54m gate
UFC 49 MGM Aug 21st, 2004……..$1.293m gate
UFC 56 MGM Nov. 19th 2005…….$1.986m gate
Noticeably when I call Sal out on his bullshit, he runs away in shame like the fag he is.
Pink Pig says
That is a HORRIBLE number. How will they repay their $600 million debt?
Saldathief says
looking at the numbers from 10 to 15 years ago, they makes the ufc look really really bad now, after Network TV and world push and half a billion dollars in spending. WOW HOW FUCKING EMBARRASSING!! The UFC is devolving. OK since 2006 UFC 178 is the worst gate and attendance. And its debatable as too worst in history. I dont have time to google like you do and I just looked at what jason has on this site under gate and attendance but those number are in the growing stage so its a shame that the ufc is back to 2002 gate numbers bahahahaha suck on that!! Hey suck on this
500 million in spending on promotion and its in the shitter!!!!
d says
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! NICE SPIN YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO EAT CROW YOU STUPID FUCK????
You had to adjust your bullshit because you were dead fucking wrong. How shameless. Everything you say is dead wrong. You are such a moron it is unbelievable. Also, I didn’t have to google it to realize they had events at the MGM years ago that did minimal gates and they were taking in massive losses. Anyone that knows anything about the ufc and Zuffa is aware of this. But I can see why a gay, weird, boxing welfare to work, queer like you doesn’t have a clue. You just got destroyed, you stupid shit.
Saldathief says
UFC doing 2005 numbers in 2014 after spending half a billion bahahahahaha
lets see for 500 million the ufc spent 4k for every 177 ppv buy bahahahah great investment bahahahha UFC are ass clowns on steroids and the steroids are wearing off.. D is a sick skinny malnourished, Indian 3rd world no toilet paper using, peasant, delusional, medicated looooser who will never amount to the pile of shit in the bucket in his family’s living room bahahahah Boxing will double the UFC in ppv buys thei year wow what a fall from an inflated grace! Zuffa is a fucking joke the sponsors wont even answer their calls bahahahha another bankruptcy coming
d says
HAHAHA!! Unreal. You are the biggest idiot.
You are comparing the biggest fights of the year from 2005 to a 125lb title fight in a division that didn’t even exist in the ufc a few years ago, and shouldn’t have even been a ppv. It was a low profile replacement card for the Jones- Cormier fight.
Your only defense is to alter the argument because you were proven wrong over and over again. You are so stupid and obviously a boxing welfare to work gay troll for Arum that it is driving you crazy to acknowledge how wrong you were. You are going to be throwing fits for the rest of your life as the ufc continues to grow and you continue to try to spin your boxing and karate propaganda while no one listens to your idiocies.
You are the dumbest individual that comments on this site.
Saldathief says
More excuses bahahahaha lame!!! D cant handle the truth that the ufc is a house of glass bahahahah
d says
HAHAHAHA!! Shameless Sal gets proven dead wrong, completely humiliated and he continues to try to spin the issue. HAHAHAHAHA!! WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT!!!
FightBusiness says
Its quite simple. If you have free events on tv all the time and then put on a bunch of ppv’s your going to dilute your product. People dont realize Dana white really doesnt know what th fuck he’s doing. He lost the company 36 million dollars and momentarily gained it back. His horrible marketing ideas (dolls, gyms, over expansion) and horrible pesonality are once again hurting the brand significantly. UFC = mediocrity. Scott Cker knows what he is doing he’s a respectable fellow. Now that he has deep pockets he will give the ufc a run for its money
d says
It’s quite simple…. you are a moron. Yeah, Dana White doesn’t know what he is doing. That is why he took a business that was a fringe sport into a juggernaut that has shattered ppv records, has a network tv deal, does massive merchandising, and is worth billions. You have no clue. Those merchandising deals are huge. Do you think boxing can do anywhere near that level? Not even close. Their expansion is obviously working if they can do million dollar gates abroad with no name fighters on a very low profile, low fighter payout fight card- this is something boxing can not do.
Coker is also a good promoter, but he doesn’t have deep pockets. Just because they are backed by Viacom, doesn’t mean that Viacom is going to go all out and give him a blank check. I would like to see Bellator give the UFC competition and grow to be a big company, but I don’t see it happening any time soon. It is good though that the fighters have some sort of alternative, because we know how White likes to black ball fighters.
The Greatest says
“A juggernaut that has shattered ppv records”
“Do you think boxing can do anywhere near that level?”
Quotes from “D”
A juggernaut? That’s laughable. 125K ppv certainly isn’t juggernaut level.
If the UFC was the juggernaut you claim, then why cant they pay their fighters millions of dollars like boxing does.
Boxing will have over 20-25 fighters, maybe more, that make over $1mil this year for one fight alone. The UFC will have zero
d says
THE GAYEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
