Fertitta talks expansion, UFC’s continued popularity

May 20, 2014 by Jason Cruz 55 Comments

Last week Lorenzo Fertitta made an appearance on CNBC’s “Fast Money Halftime Report” where he spoke glowingly about the growth of business overseas including the announcement of The Ultimate Fighter Latin America.  Fertitta also touched on other subjects in the brief spot on the program.

Among the things Fertitta talked about was the company plans of expanding internationally including Europe and Asia.  He also identified Brazil and Latin America as “hotbed” growth areas.   Fertitta talked about the upcoming TUF Latin America

Fertitta touted that the UFC has the highest average price per ticket in sports at $254.  He indicated that Vegas have “pricing power” which he stated the UFC could charge fans a premium price.  Brazil was another area with “pricing power.”

He also spoke about Ronda Rousey and how women have been drawn to the sport “migrating into the demographic base” as a result of the UFC women’s bantamweight champion.

There was also the New York issue which Fertitta gave the generalities on the bill.  He identified that the reason the bill is held up was due to the Culinary Union and acknowledging that it has done a “great job in lobbying the state of New York to try to keep us [the UFC] out.”

Payout Perspective:

Notably, Fertitta pivoted when directly asked about the ticket sales for this Saturday’s event.  Fertitta is a polished, credible spokesperson for the UFC.  The greatest example is how he seemingly complimented the Culinary Union’s efforts to keep the UFC out of New York during the interview (at 2:27). It’s clear that the UFC sees international expansion as an area of opportunity to grow revenue and we will see how opportunities like TUF Latin America will do for the brand.

Its quite obvious that the US is not a growing market for the UFC anymore. People initially expected MMA to provide the real-life Rocky style fighting that boxing didnt provide. Unfortunately the fighters mainly come from wrestling backgrounds which creates a pretty weak presentation of fighting.

The UFC has a very long way to go in terms of truly expanding internationally. It isnt a sport many people can watch regularly.

No, the problem is you can’t read you prag. The international market is relevant, but it is nothing compared to the US/Canadian market.

Go back and look at your fight of the century figures from Froch-Groves II (estimations of course). The promoter expects to shatter nearly every record imaginable and they still won’t gross even half of what big events in the US do.

Go drive on the left side of the street.

    Estimated revenue for Froch-Groves 2 in the UK = £20 million = $33.6 million.

Dana White would bend over for that kind of revenue. May weather… Not so much.

Man, you again are a liar and an exaggerator.

Froch-Groves 2(which hasn’t happened yet) was estimated by the PROMOTER(you know guys who are very well known for exaggerating) said he was expecting 15-20 million pounds. You conveniently used the high end estimation of the promoter.

What you either lied or are too stupid to realize is that a fight like Weidman-Silva II……..gate=6.2m, ppv revenue=56.38m, and we haven’t even gotten into international tv rights, sponsorhsip, merchandise/concessions for the event, weigh in expo revenue, etc. Weidman-Silva II generated at least double what the revenue will be for Froch-Groves II, probably closer to 3x the amount.

    Wow you are an idiot.

Well, they’ve done ppvs in the UK that have made over 10m. The ppv revenue has come from the US/Canada market though.

Regardless though, how ofter does a boxing fight ever generate over 10 million in the UK? Almost never. It might have happened 4-5 times ever. Also, to prove the point I’ve been making, the UFC generates 10m in the US/Canada in nearly every ppv they do.

What was the UK television revenue? Less than $100k? Attendance barely over 8,000… SAD. If it was lucrative they would be going back to the UK purple lips. Like I said… Boxing stays steady and global as it has been for decades.

Froch-Groves 2 is likely to hit 1 million buys, 80,000 seats sold, HBO license money, sponsorships, and international rights in 150 countries.

    UFC is garbage… Pure garbage.

What was the UK tv revenue? I don’t know and you don’t know. 100k is a fabricated figure you made up. The attendance is irrelevant, what is relevant is how much they paid for the gate which was 1.25m. I made it very clear that the ppv buys were coming from the US/Canada which validates my argument yet again that the US/Canada market dwarfs that of any international market notably the UK. You were the one who claimed I was lying, then when I proved you wrong yet again, you altered the argument to what was generated specifically in the UK for that ufc. Also, the UFC does bigger figures internationally in Brazil and Australia than they do in the UK and they still generate millions in the UK per event.

“If it was lucrative they would be going back to the UK?” They HAVE been going back to the UK you dummy. As a matter of fact, they have done 14 total events in the UK and 1 in Ireland. 11 of which came after that event. All the figures you are giving me for Froch-Groves 2 have been assessed, yet you are going back to it I guess because you are a masochist. The end result is even the promoter is admitting the fight of the century in the UK where they do record numbers in everything they are still only grossing in an alleged range of 25m-33m-I’m guessing the lower figure is closer to the accurate figure judging by how accurate promoters are. So again, the fight of the century in the UK is generating far less than half of what a big ufc can do.

You must have gotten raped by a ufc fighter or something. That would explain your femininity.

Also, if the UFC continues to progress they way they’ve been eventually mma will grow more popular abroad. Boxing has been around for well over 100 years, mma has only been around for 20. These things take time.

This is a great advertisement for the UFC nothing more Feritta is a sales man. Foreign markets are far less profitable than us markets. The UFC could of had all of Japan but they wont play ball with the boys there. Australia has a very small population considering its size so it basically its like adding another US state like NY, no real market. Everything in Australia is super expensive maybe they can do one big event a year. Wake me up when they do. Brazil gets our PPV for free on public TV so who are they kidding. I say foreign markets are 10% of USA market combined, not much of an expansion financially. Maybe they have a 50 year plan idk, The US market should be downsized and have more quality not quantity imo. It will be interesting to see how 2015 will be.

Tops, their main market is better than ever. PPV is down this year only because of the losses of St Pierre and Silva. Let’s see what happens to boxing’s ppv when Floyd/Manny retire. Also, the UFC only does 55% of their business these days from their events(probably actually less this year because of the drop in ppv buys).

Sal, yes, the UFC has a deal with Globo in Brazil that airs the fights on live tv where it is very popular there. They are getting more in their tv contract in Brazil annually than they are with FOX. They bring in 120 million per year with Globo. They also have a Televisa deal that is aired in 20 Latin American countries also free tv.

Obviously free tv deals do not bring in the revenue that ppv does, however they do have a pretty nice contract with them.

Brazil doesn’t get PPV for free, the shows are on combate a subscription combat sports channel, 4 shows a year are on Globo and that’s free TV, they show smaller events on SporTV Brazils biggest sports network.

The UFC gets something like $60 million a year from TV in Brazil.

It didnt need much time. MMA has sold out stadiums occassionaly but rarely. Alot of MMA’s quick popularity is because they incorporated Boxing’s blueprint. When they did it their way (no holds barred, no weight divisions, no time limits) they were fighting in holiday Inn’s. then they began following boxing and creating weight divisions, weigh ins, time limits , lots of rules, press conferences, they are now doing nationwide press conferences because they saw mayweather canelo do it. They are good but not that original.
