MMA Junkie reports that Dana White’s solution to the complaints about UFC fighter pay is to eliminate fight bonuses. The Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and KO of the Night would be done away with in order to compensate the lower tiered fighters.
Via MMA Junkie:
“You don’t like the structure? All right, we’ll pay the lower-level guys more money – no more f–king bonuses,” Dana White said. “You guys come in, you negotiate your contracts, and we do away with all bonuses. That’s what I’m thinking about doing.”
White has been in discussions with Lorenzo Fertitta about redistributing the salaries for its fight nights. As a result, the reported bonuses, which were made standard at $50K this year would be put back into the salary pool to compensate the preliminary fighters. This would give Zuffa another $200K to bolster salaries.
Payout Perspective:
White’s comments sound more like a threat than a response to the complaints. Its also a way to divide the fighters, a tactic that can be used whenever workers think about unionizing. For example, a guy like James Krause, who made $100K in bonuses at UFC 161 would never have a chance to make that much again. Instead he’d probably take home $20K flat. A substantial difference that would absolutely be pointed out by Zuffa. The move is geared toward fighters that look for the bonus or have received it in the past. It would make them much more against people complaining in public about fighter pay.
One solution not talked about is Zuffa extending its budget to pay fighters more. There are obvious budgetary issues and the fact it is putting on more events would mean more payouts. But, White’s solution would cause an upheaval among fighters, which is probably what was intended.
Machiel Van says
Ugh, more child-like petulance. The absence of performance-based incentives (beyond fighters keeping their spots on the roster) will only hurt the product, otherwise the UFC would not have implemented them in the first place. This was a counter-productive argument that will not placate any of the complaints about the amount that the UFC pays its fighters.
John S. says
Strikes me as a pretty blatant attempt to “divide-and-conquer.” Dana’s telling the mid-tier and above fighters that the only way to improve pay for those at the bottom is if they take away potential bonuses from those higher on the totem pole.
michael says
In a not really serious way…
Things Dana could also do:
> Cut the medical insurance
> Charge the Fighters for being shown in Zuffa-produced media content (Countdown-Shows, Vlogs, appearing on the ufc website)
Things the Fighters could also demand:
> when joining the UFC, being paid retroactively for all the years of training before the UFC
> get a loser bonus also, you know, because the guy didn’t get his win-bonus
Man, I really wanted to come up with three things for both…
Steve says
Honestly, getting rid of the bonus system would be good for fighters.
One of the biggest problems entry level fighters face is that their pay is unpredictable. Even if the size of the pie stays the same, taking money from the win bonus slice and the completely arbitrary performance bonus slice and moving it to the guaranteed ‘show’ money slice will do wonders for fighter’s ability to set a budget.
BrainSmasher says
I think it was a good response by Dana. The fighters need to realize what they have. These bonus’ didn’t always exist and they don’t have to exist but people have forgot that and take them for granted.
Also no one fights any different because these exist. THis was only a way for the UFC to give back to the fighters and a way to decide who gets the money. Fights are no more exciting now than before they were implemented. Fighters fight the way they fight and they are only trying to win. Even when Fitch was a rookie it didn’t keep him from being a boring fighter. People want to be exciting to be liked by fans and the UFC. Which makes them more money regardless of bonus money.
The truth is a fighter is only going to get what he can get in negotiations. The UFC isn’t coming off their budget and they are not going to pay a noob 50K to fight. So if these guys really want to lose their bonus opportunity. Let them keep speaking. I can understand Dana’s anger. When you do something for someone you don’t have to do because you care. Then it comes back and slaps you in the face. As a business owner I do give aways through out the year as a customer appreciation. Every year I would give away a $1000 TV. Of course every year the winner would start being an ass from that point forward and now are no longer customers. So I no longer give anything away. And people wonder why business seem to not care about the people. It is because people in general are selfish greedy people who are out for themselves and never appreciate anything. That goes for customers and employees.
People without power want it to be everyone for themselves when it benefits them. But bitch when others in a higher position do the same.
Tops of says
Very unbecoming for a president of a company to handle the issue the way Dana did …it only adds fuel to the fire…he is just evading the issue and giving another issue”giving bonuses frm the heart crap” because he dosent want to confront the real issue which is why are the fighters pay is low…..the media and fans should continue to pursue the issue
But based on mma sites I checked a lot of fans do not buy Dana’s crap anymore….unlike in the chucklidell days to UFC 100 days were his approval ratings were at all time high hahaha….
He should remedy the situation and handle it professionally
You can’t bullshit people forever….
Marketing is very important but there should be substance to back up the hype
Matt C. says
I understand the argument but to me this is the idolization of sports stars clouding the argument. I wish all these people would put this same vigor into getting teacher’s salaries raised.
The fighters are not getting screwed any more than almost every other working person in America.

From mma junkie: June 24
Dana White wants UFC to be bigger than the NFL and the Rolling Stones (Video)
According to a June 24 post from MMA Junkie, UFC boss Dana White doesn’t view Bellator MMA as legit competition to his empire.
Here we go again…..lol….the “manic”Dana ranting again….
If you read the article dana is targeting big fishes nfl, rolling stones….and dismisses belator..but the fact that in the last couple of interviews he keeps mentioning Viacom over and over…looks like he is worried about Viacom…because its a media company and can spend money on bellator…
BrainSmasher says
Dana and Lorenzo has addressed the fighter pay issue. They are never going to change the size of the pie the fighters get right now. They have mentioned why the fighters get what they get but people refuse to listen. People never what to see the size of the “Big Company”. The sport is still way to small to stop putting the resources into growing the sport. This is why o one can make a living outside the UFC in MMA. Because it still has a lot of growing to do. To structure the fighter pay like other HUGE sports would basically make it impossible to grow and it would eventually decline into nothing.
One thing the UFC has shown in their history is they will not be stopped on their goal to grow this sport into a huge global sport. They have released and not signed big name fighters to protect this goal. They have passed on huge lucrative tv deals to protect this goal. If the UFC has to crap every fighter they have and start fresh. They will do it and to be honest it would only take a year to be right back to square one. They made these guys and can make more. They have never given into the Culinary Union and they will not give into greedy fighters.
BrainSmasher says
None of the fighters will take a higher pay over the bonus. At best the lower guys will get an extra 5K per fight. That doesn’t buy anything. But the bonus changes lives. A former training partner bought his house with his 3 OTN bonus’. When guys get 50-100K bonus its a life changer and every fighter looks forward to that and will not give it up for a crummy 5K before taxes.
BrainSmasher says
I think what the UFC needs to do. Since everyone who gets in the UFC thinks they should be rich. They need to open a long talked about feeder Org. If they have to pay so much money for every joe blow no name can they give a try out to. Then they might as well force everyone to go through a feeder Org and earn their UFC label. The UFC goes through to many new low level guys to be paying them all a fortune. When most of them are gone in 3 fights. They have no value. A feeder Org would get them out of the UFC banner and make them earn their place and build some name recognition.
The UFC is just to easy to get into to demand suck high pay for getting there. This isn’t the NFL or NBA where there are 10’s of millions of people playing the sport trying to get to the top. There isn’t many fighters out there and all it takes is a handful of wins to get in. Many people get in the UFC with less than 10 fights. People are still getting into the UFC by having connections with a gym or a fighter. These people haven’t beat the odds like a rookie in the NFL. Through Middle School, High School, and College. The cream rises to the top. They have to keep beating out everyone else. That isn’t the case in MMA. There is no way to know who the best is outside the UFC. All you have to go by is a record and hope that guy isn’t a product of weak competition and match making(styles make fights).

pureincognito says
That would really help the bottom level guys; they’d go from 6 to fight/12 to win to around 15 to fight/21 to win. It depends on if they like the guarantee or if they want to take a chance and go for as much as 100 extra. Maybe they could let the fighters vote at the next summit on whether or not to change it. They could also do it on a card by card basis and take a vote from all the fighters on each card.
I personally like it the way it is, reward the guys who leave it all out there.
Tops of says
Yeah and in b.s. last post regarding the Kennedy article the other day(kenedy latest to speak)he bashes majority of the mma fighters in his last post….so he watches the UFC to see Dana or just to see UFC logo up close….weird…hahaha
Matt C. says
I think it’s important to keep in mind that with other main stream American sports most of the athletes coming up get massive exposure. For example look at all the top picks in the draft. They are household names already through college sports. There is already a revenue return for those athletes that get drafted. Hell look at Tim Tebow that guy sold a massive amount of jerseys for being an ok player in the NFL. Why was that… because college sports made him a household name.
That system of getting players from the college sports empire every year is a huge advantage for the big American sports leagues. It saves them money and gives them new stars every year. It’s just another example when comparing those other big sports leagues to the UFC that they have all these advantages and less expenses and can afford to share a bigger portion of the revenue. If the UFC was getting household names from a college system every year fueling their roster it would save them a ton of money. Instead of having to spend money marketing stars and building future talent that money would be spent elsewhere. Some would go to higher salaries because those fighters would be providing an immediate return on investment.
Chris says
I’m fine with this decision, would def help out the lower level guys. If you took the 200k in bonus money and then some of the backroom bonuses and just give 10k to everyone on the card, about 24-26 fighters per card it works out well.
May not mean much to the higher guys but the bottom end guys who make 6/6, 8/8, 10/10. 12/12 it would really help them.
Getting 16/16. 18/8. 20/10. 22/10/ Just giving them more money guaranteed isnt a bad idea.
Aintitthetruth says
There is no reason why every UFC fighter can’t be guaranteed 20k MINIMUM, even if they lose. A guaranteed contract would be nice too. Currently they are “independent contractors”, which is THE SAME AS A STRIPPER, and can have the plug pulled even if they lose after having a 3 fight win streak stopped (see Gerald harris, a fighter who delivered a sensational KO slam for the UFC and had finished all of his UFC fights.)
Aintitthetruth says
There is no reason why every UFC fighter can’t be guaranteed 20k MINIMUM, even if they lose, and keep fotn, sotn, and KO of the night bonuses.Actually, there is a reason. Dana white is too cheap, and wants the money for himself/Zuffa bigwigs. A guaranteed contract would be nice too. assassin says
Fighter pay will only dramatically improve if one of two things happens:
1. A real union
2. A sea change seminal event. Same as college athletics, there would need to be a Huge event which brings everything out of the dark and into the light. For college, the most likely scenario is the NCAA title game, as there are so many players who are one and done. Ref tosses the ball for the opening tip, and the players just let it fall to the floor, no one picks it up, one walks over to the announcers grabs the mic and says “we will no longer play without being paid” and they all walk off the court.
The UFC equivalent would be a Superfight where after the ref instructions, they grab the mic and say fighter pay is not fair and walk out of the Octagon. However, you need someone willing to accept the backlash.
That would grab everyone’s attention.
Matt C. says
Walking out at the beginning of any fight is not a good idea. The negative for fighters will far out weigh any positives that come of that. A move like that has the possibility of killing the PPV market for MMA. Which is a huge piece of the pie where fighter pay comes from. You kill that or even hurt it somewhat and fighter pay is going down… not up.
I for one would never spend another dime on a PPV after that. Punishing the fans that spend their hard earned money because you want more money is not a good answer to the problem.
Matt C. says
Also for the record I’m good with doing away with fight night bonuses and spreading that 200k amongst the fighters on that card.
Tops of says
Fighters should just be united..because they would have all the leverage vs UFC….because there are other outside partners now involved in the sport….for example if they stage a press con…the news would be huge and the UFC would be pressured by fox, flash entertainment, the sponsors,to fix the problem because they have a stake in the UFC as well…..
assassin says
Matt C — you just made my point. The fighters need to create a situation where the risk of loss to the UFC is so great, that the cost of treating fighters better is not as significant.
The cost to the brand of Silva/GSP walking out of a Superfight could be as much as $600MM hit to the value of the UFC as opposed to an extra $5k/fighter for 10 fighters per card.

The UFC should just sack a quarter of their roster, basically most of the bottom tier guys. They don’t need to do 12 fight cards except for PPVs. then they can take that money from say 4 fights and spread it among the rest of the fighters on the card. They can’t be getting much money off facebook to air fights and they would probably do similar ratings on Fuel with a prefight show.
If they have their eye on some up and coming fighters, work out a deal with regional promoters and do an unofficial winner gets a UFC contract and the UFC can foot say 50% of the fight purse as a sweetener for the promoter.
duck says
If a fighter walked out before a fight, they would get their fight licence revoked and would probably never fight again, at least in any place with a commission. They would get sued off the UFC and probably more lawsuits from sponsors and elsewhere. They would most likely piss of the fans in attendance and everyone who bought a PPV, thus would have trouble getting fans to buy into any future fight (if they somehow managed to get out of a UFC contract and get somewhere to licence their fight)
BrainSmasher says
Matt C
That was my point. The exposure. Tops is a boxing fan. A sport that breeds high school drop outs and street scum. MMA outside the UFC is small. Meaning there is a ton of little promotions regionally growing these fighters the UFC is picking from. So they do not get the exposure a College football player would. Those sports over the years have built a huge infrastructure of media and tv deals that gets every player and ever team talked about or shown to everyone across the country. The UFC doesn’t have a designated Feeder Org. They have rivals who destroy them selves competing and who never let their fighters go to the UFC. So all the UFC has to pick from is no name guys in small shows. Who contribute nothing and are worth nothing.
BrainSmasher says
LOL @ the Boxing fans trying to push MMA down the same road Boxing is on. Duck is right. Any fighter who walked out of a fight would be screwed for life. The UFC would sue them and would carry on fine without them.
Right now the UFC puts on a full event of fighters for us fans. Its getting to the point where those bottom feeders are causing more problems than they are worth. As a true MMA fan and not a poser who steals PPVs and pretends to be a fan. I like getting my moneys worth when I buy a PPV. So of course I like 12 fights rather than 5. Or in boxings case 1 fight. But is these fighters cant appreciate the opportunity they have been given. Then as Duck suggested. The UFC should cut those bottom fights out. It is better than letting them destroy the entire sport because of their welfare bum attitude.
But there would still be a problem. Those guys are there to be tested and see how good they are. All good fighters have to go throw the bottom of the card. Because the UFC still doesn’t know what it is getting when they sign a fighter. So in addition to cutting off the bottom fights. They would still need a feeder Promotion to do these fights. You cant bring up every rookie and feed him to the best guys in the world his first fight. Plus those guys need fights to build their name.
If I was the UFC. I would release anyone who opens their mouth. The UFC is a private company and the fighters choose to work for a set price for that company. Their complaining only lowers employee morale. I would have released Kennedy on the sport. You don’t want to work for these “slave wages”? Fine you don’t have to. There is the door!

Why the hate for boxers? The guys at the bottom make more than the guys at the bottom of the MMA by a longshot. The minimum here in Oregon for a pro boxing fight is something like 1200. At least thats what my coach says, and he boxed pro. I have heard of guys fighting pro fights for free just to get experience. Plus there is more than one avenue to the top. With MMA it is UFC or bust. In boxing you have WBO,WBC,WBA, and I think IBF? Heck throw the IBO in there. The UFC is a dirty monopoly.
John S. says
I just want to note regarding GGG and Macklins 1.2 million viewers. a pa channel like HBO were a subscription is $10 a month, means a hell of lot more than basic cable or even network tv getting 2 or 3 times that much. There’s a reason shows like Game of Thrones are major success with ratings that are a fraction what is seen on network TV even though it costs more.
BrainSmasher says
It makes it a success. But it doesn’t make it popular. I can turn $5 into $10. It would be a great transaction. But it would t mean I was rich. Like I said before. Just about the entire fan base of boxing has HBO and Showtime because online MMA. You can’t get quality fights on Fox, FX, Fuel, Spike, Fox Sports, NBC sports, etc. Again. Profitable for HBO? Yes. A good sign for Boxings popularity? Nope!
Back in 2002 when the UFC and MMA fan base was very small by today’s standards. There was a show on FSN called “Best Damn Sports Show Period”. They brought on a few fighters and since it was really the first time MMA had been on Tv. Lots of the fans tuned it. BDSSP set their ratings record each time. I think it once hit 500k viewers. Which is crazy for anything on FSN at the time because how the Regional stuff worked. That is how UFC 37.5 come about.
The UFC later was able to deal nearly 4 million viewers on Spike. Boxing calls it a success if they break 1 million with one of their biggest fights of the year. Even after running TUF into the ground they can Draw more fans than that.
Also MMA fighters get paid more than boxers at the lower levels. There is exceptions because some local areas are different. But it is pretty week known tha. mmA guys are paid more. They also move up in pay quicker because they are not required to have as many fights as boxers. Boxers are only paid more at the very highest level. Sponsor money isnt even close due to tv ratings and demo reach.

In MMA there is only the UFC, and good luck making millions. Ask the average american who the heavyweight UFC champ is, then ask them who a heavyweight boxing champ is… You know where I’m going with this.
Plus factor in all the dangers posed by training submissions and wrestling as opposed to just boxing. MMA is higher risk for a lower reward. PERIOD.

The UFC doesn’t have 10 belts per weight class like Boxing does. It also hasn’t been around 100 years. If you picked a single Belt like say the IBF and asked who has it or has had it. People couldn’t tell one belt from the other. They would have no idea which belt you are talking about or who had it. They would name a name they have heard of and hope he had a belt and hope it was the right belt. Enjoy your cluster fuck of a sport, Old Man!

Just ask tim sylvia. He got starched in like ten seconds by an over the hill ray mercer. You ever notice how olympic boxers keep boxing, and olympic wrestlers have to coach or fight for peanuts? Its too bad because there’s no incentive fr good young elite boxers to cross over like wrestlers do.
