Dan Rafael of ESPN reports that the fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez earned over 1.15 million PPV buys. Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum confirmed the numbers to ESPN and HBO did not dispute Arum’s projection.
Despite “fan fatigue” for the fourth fight between the two and an admitted slow promotion, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum indicated a late surge in interest helped bring the buys above the 1 million PPV buy mark. The numbers are better than the 900K buys the fighter did in his first loss of 2012 against Timothy Bradley.
A quick estimate based on the 1.15 million PPV buys has the fight earning $70 million in domestic TV revenue.
Pacquiao’s last three PPV fights:
November 2011 – Marquez III: 1.25M PPV buys
June 2012 – Bradley: 900K PPV buys
December 2012 – Marquez IV: 1.15M PPV buys
Payout Perspective:
It is odd to consider that the fourth fight’s success may mean a fifth fight between the two could (and should) draw bigger numbers. I say odd because admittedly there was a lack of interest (which may have contributed to the sluggish promotion) in seeing these two fight a fourth time before December 8th. But, the 1.15 million PPV buys is a success and also is a statement as to the drawing power of the “big fight” in boxing.

Even a fight with no hype and hardcore buzz TROUNCES the biggest draws in UFC

you sad person
Weezy02 says
Props to Manny. He and Floyd are still the kingpins of PPV.
Diego says
That’s good money for Manny. I think Pac-Marq V will do more than that, but I don’t know if any other fight by either guy would do nearly as well. Marq is just not a huge draw and Manny has now lost two in a row.
And Sampson is beating on his usual drum. My theory is that Sampson and BS are the same person, they just troll opposite ends of the spectrum.
Brain Smasher says
LOL thats a pretty crappy theory you have there!
I wonder why people believe Arum when he “reports” PPV buys? We all know most of a boxers hype is based on “everyone else is watching”. Which is why so many non boxing fans or casuals pay so much money to watch some matches. So there is good reason to inflat the popularity of a fight or fighter. I ussually dont say anything about Boxing numbers. But this throws up red flags that grabs my attention. How do they have their PPV rates in so soon when the UFC has admited it sometimes can take months to get a final number and takes many weeks to get a good ballpark number. UFC numbers come from outside sources. We cant reply on them to much and ideally it would be good to have an outside source and a confirmation from Dana to keep both honest and accurate. BUt just as inaccurate as outside sources are in MMA i feel taking a well known currupt boxing promoter at his word is ewually is unreliable. I dont see how this fight with no interest is beating other Pacman fights that were much more meaningful and hyped.
My question is. Is there anyone out there besides the people directly involved like HBO,Arum, etc confirming these numbers or are we just taking them at their word?
Adder says
this fight was actually much more meaningful then is being stated by others. marquez has the support of mexican and mexican american fans who are one of the most hardcore boxing fans alive. pac obviously has all filipinos and many casuals.
deffinitly a bigger fight then the bradley fight. as the numbers show.
this just shows how insane a manny vs mayweather fight would be. probably over 3m buys

? We all know most of a boxers hype is based on “everyone else is watching”
A Logical Fallacy, and speculation at best, You are an idiot.
Sampson Simpson says
Remember when Lesnar Overeem was revised and really did 400k buys instead of.the 900k initially reported?
Saldathief says
Is 30 million dollars hype? You cant pay a fighter that kind of money and not produce excellent ppv numbers. Even Marquez’s guarantee is far greater than any UFC fighters. I agree Arum is a snake, but he’s willing to pay 30 mil to a fighter, what kind of money do you think he’s making? I say those ppv numbers are accurate. Also take into account the Mexican and Asian ppv, it was like the Super Bowl to them. Boxing is more world wide, UFC is basically North America. And in Brazil its on free TV. Thanks Dana for screwing the US fans! Free UFC in Brazil maybe the UFC can move there, I hear the rent is cheap.
Weezy02 says
“Remember when Lesnar Overeem was revised and really did 400k buys instead of.the 900k initially reported?”
No, but I remember when it was adjusted from 750,000 to 535,000. What’s your source on the 400,000?
Brain Smasher says
Saldathief
I never said the event didnt do good. I asked wether the numbers were accurate. What the fighters made doesnt have to support the buy rates. In theory those salaries could have been paid with 600-700K buys. It didnt have to sell over 1 million to pay those salaries. So their pay doesnt prove anything. So i dotn see how you see their pay and accept every other number thrown around.
Also how is the UFC screwing the US? We have always payed for UFC even before the current owners. Just because Brazil is given shows for free has nothing to do with you. How would Brazil being charged effect you? Would you be less screwed by the UFC? I dont understand your logic. You are completely uneffect by what Brazil pays for a UFC event. You are not screwed.
Saldathief says
Dana, I mean Brain Smasher, Bob Arum has every number manipulated way before any deal is signed, you obviously don’t know anything about the business of sports. He has guaranteed money from numerous sources and almost certainly knows the take on any given fight long before any deal is set. You sound like a foolish Democrat with your logic that one person pays for something and someone else gets it for free and it doesn’t effect the person paying. Who do you think is flipping the bill for those free shows in Brazil? The people that are dumb enough to to pay 60 bucks! I It also cheapens the product when someone gets it for free. As we see the UFC is getting redundant except for maybe a handful of fights a year. If Arums PPV numbers were inflated like you accuse than why wouldn’t the pay go down? And it just proves an earlier point I have made that if 600-700k buys could support a 30 mil purse than wow!! the ufc is exploiting the entire universe not just its fighters.
Weezy02 says
“Who do you think is flipping the bill for those free shows in Brazil?”
Not arguing with you on some of your other points but in regard to the question above, Zuffa has a nice contract with the Globo network. It more than finances their shows in Brazil.
Brain Smasher says
First i never Arum inflated the numbers. I just asked how we know he is telling the truth. Big difference. BUt seeing your logic in your post i see how you fail to see that difference. You sure as hell are not “flipping the bill” for the Brazil shows. Just as you were not for their UK expansion. Just as you were not “flipping the bill” for Zuffa when they were taking a 40 million loss trying to grow it in the US. You are paying for the fights you choose to pay for. Not for the right to bitch about how Zuffa manages the UFC. I dont by a PPV based on what people around the world pay for the same show. Guys in the UK have been getting free UFC PPVs for years. You didnt feel “cheated” then. Its the same thing you were just to dumb to know it was going on. Also most of the cost for their brazil events are covered by the gate. Not to mention tv deals like Weezy mentioned.
Do you think it was fair to those other countries for you to have the option to see the UFC event for over a decade while thye could not see it at all? Was that fair? Was they being screwed? Speaking of democrats. Where do you get that your PPV purchase entitles you to anything but the fights they are selling? You are a customer not a share holder. Get a life!
Saldathief says
Valid points! I’m not an Arum fan at all, I really don’t like him and think he is a scum bag. But he knows the game and has been doing it for what 40 + years or something. I think he was wrong with the things he said about MMA, is he a lier? of course he is! but no more a lier than Zuffa’s or Don King for that matter. I’m sorry! Its just pisses me off to know that other markets get free ppv fights. You dont see it in boxing, only the UFC, why? 90% of the money the UFC makes is in AMERICAN DOLLARS! IT fuels the entire UFC’s economy! Dont think for a second the we are not subsidizing free ppv in third world markets or England. And its only fare if a market can hold its own without someone else paying for it. Goes to show that The UFC doesn’t t care about the USA fans only the money they can take from them so they can try to build other markets. I guess we have different views on whats fare and whats welfare. The UFC needs to close some of these fights they are talking about with out these guys getting hurt in training! I think the UFC is slowly slipping away, I hope I’m wrong.
Saldathief says
Globo network is a third world joke compared to any American market as far as advertising dollars! please
Weezy02 says
“Globo network is a third world joke compared to any American market as far as advertising dollars! please”
Not correct. Brazil is the wold’s 6th largest economy. See below description and pay particular attention to the last sentence:
“Rede Globo (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʁedʒi ˈɡlobu], Globe Network), or simply Globo, is a Brazilian television network, launched by media mogul Roberto Marinho on April 26, 1965. It is owned by media conglomerate Organizações Globo, being by far the largest of its holdings. Globo is the second-largest commercial TV network in annual revenue worldwide behind just American Broadcasting Company[1] and the largest producer of telenovelas.[2]
Sampson Simpson says
Acelino Freitas was bigger at his peak in Brazil than Anderson Silva is.now
Saldathief says
People still don’t have running water and toilets in Brazil, lots of them! The USA has multiple networks, there is a monopoly in Brazil, please. If the UFC charged $45.00 a show in Brazil no one would be watching. And now I see Strike Force is going under, not a good sign.
Saldathief says
BRASILIA, May 3 (Xinhua) — Brazil has 16.27 million people living in extreme poverty, which accounts for 8.5 percent of its total population, Minister of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger Tereza Campello announced on Tuesday.
I wonder if these numbers are inflated like PPV numbers lol
Brain Smasher says
What is your point? You really sounds stupid. Who the hell said the “extreme poor” would be the ones buying PPVs to begin with? Hell the poor isnt who is buying them in the US either. UFC from all reports and studies edicates has a higher income class of fans than boxing and other sports. What kind of idiot thinks the poor reflect the success of any business or product? Hell the UFC buys rates were at an all time high when our country was in a recession and more people were struggling.
Sampson Simpson says
Higher income class than boxing fans? You must be stupid AND retarded to post such an asinine statement. UFC pays celebrities to pretend to like that garbage. Look at the floor of boxings biggest events and you will see a heavy dough crowd
