Answer “In the Moment” May 25th

May 9, 2011 by Jason Cruz 3 Comments

MMA Junkie reports that Spike TV will air the UFC’s second “In the Moment” episode this time featuring lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The first pre-event preview show featured then light heavyweight challenger Jon Jones.

Edgar will also be featured in the standard UFC Countdown show. “In the Moment” will debut Wednesday, May 25th at 10pm.  The show will feature Edgar as he prepares for his rematch with Gray Maynard. The show will be told from Edgar’s point of view.

Payout Perspective:

The show should not only be a good promotional tool for Edgar, but for the lighter weight divisions. I think Aldo-Hominick at UFC 129 showed MMA fans that the lighter weight divisions could do well at the top of a card. It will be interesting to see how Edgar-Maynard will do later this month followed up by Faber-Cruz in July.

Hmm… I wonder if they will go through with this now that Edgar vs Maynard is off UFC 130.

The Answer…probably not. Tough break all around for Edgar, Maynard and Anthony Pettis. We may forget that he was once in line for a title shot.

He still will be if he gets past Clay Guida. It’s a bad situation for the whole lightweight division. What if Frankie gets injured again during the next camp? Interim belt (ugh)?

An interesting question: Looking at the UFC 123 and 125 buyrates, does anyone think that UFC 130 may actually get a higher buyrate with the new main event? It’s an interesting consideration…
