New reality show to focus on women fighters

December 27, 2010 by Jason Cruz 1 Comment

Producers of a new reality television show focusing on women MMA fighters is holding open casting calls for the show. The reality show, “Girlfight” will focus on the daily routines of female mixed martial artists.

From the press release from Combat Sports Media:

Female fighters with a marketable look are encouraged to apply for the multi-episode show by sending the show’s casting agents a resume, photos, video, as well as a cover letter stating why they feel they would be a strong fit for a reality female fighting show.

The casting is open to both professional and amateur fighters of any combat sports discipline including, but not limited to, MMA, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Judo, Kung Fu, freestyle or Greco Roman wrestling, and Karate.

Below is a preview of the proposed reality show:

Applications can be sent to: Girlfightshow@gmail.com

Payout Perspective:

This is another example of the growing popularity of MMA as we see more women involved in MMA. I believe that the female MMA reality show was attempted earlier this year. (h/t Cage Potato) However, I do not believe Ultimate Women’s Challenge ever made the air. The press release does not indicate if or when the show would air. Hopefully if the show is made, there is a mix of talent, personality and beauty. Let’s face it, the show will get better ratings if the female participants look like Gina Carano.

Good point about the eye candy factor.

It’s no coincidence that the only one of these shows to make it off the ground was ‘Fight Girls’ on the Oxygen network back in 2006/2007, and the cast on that show was incredibly photogenic. Gina Carano, Michelle Waterson, Felice Herrig, Kerry Vera, & Miriam Nakamoto are all bona fide knockouts (pun intended) and the rest of the cast wasn’t bad to look at either. In addition to the cast being attractive, they made sure to play up their looks whenever possible.

Women’s MMA is never going to draw strong numbers based on purely athletic concerns. No women’s sport does. If they don’t sell the ‘sex’ side of things, this show will flop badly.
