MMAPayout.com has learned the 4th episode of TUF 12 has earned a 1.3 HH rating on the strength of 1.6 million viewers. The episode performed reasonably well in the MMA demographics of M18-34 and M18-49 with a 2.03 and 1.6, respectively.
Quarterlies: 1.14, 1.12, 1.20, 1.32
The debut episode of UFC Primetime: Lesnar vs. Velasquez followed TUF 12 with an 11PM broadcast and garnered a solid, but unspectacular 974,000 viewers.
Payout Perspective:
Disappointing slip, especially for the start of Brocktober. The start of playoff baseball may be the culprit for the lower ratings as the Yankees might have been enough to take people away from TUF for this night. The lower rating is a little surprising since Spike had a solid night of UFC – UFC Unleashed (featuring Mir v. Lesnar II), TUF and then the first episode of UFC Primetime.
Is it me, or is Josh Koscheck a better coach than I thought he’d be? After the loss, Koscheck could have blown up and taken out a door (like Forrest Griffin or Rampage Jackson), but he showed remarkable restraint in just throwing down a chair and not breaking anything. A lot of people hate him, but seeing him on TUF has made him a little more human.

It would be interesting to look at the market ratings and see how big the drop off was from the markets for the two baseball teams playing at that time as compared to previous weeks for TUF.

The fact that Kos has been a college wrestling coach makes his behavior pretty unsurprising. He’s probably had to deal with a lot of situations where his wrestlers have lost matches, and you have to keep your cool in that environment with a large amount of people around. I figured he’d be a decent coach based on that experience. Unfortunately for him, St. Pierre seems to have picked the better team/the right matchups, so his coaching experience may be for nill. Also, I did find it a little sour that he just walked out of the gym when Andy Main lost, although he was VERY frustrated with him for abandoning the game plan.
It’s more interesting to see his frustration that he can’t get into GSP’s head at all. Georges just ain’t biting.

I’ve yet to watch an episode this year. Is it something you recommend? Or is the same ruff shed entertainment since season 5?
Jeremy says
MMAGuru,
I think both last season as well as this one has had less of the BS pranks and whatnot.
I think that Kos seems to focus more on getting them in shape, whereas GSP and co are offering up a more balanced approach. Using conditioning, skills and mental.
Diego says
guru,
The fights this season have been great, very competitive and technical. The behind-the-scenes drama I can do without, but a good fight on free TV every week is nice.
