Pacquiao-Horn scores huge ratings for ESPN Saturday night

July 3, 2017

According to Nielsen, the Manny Pacquiao-Jeff Horn fight drew a 1.8 metered market rating which makes it the highest-rated boxing event on ESPN this decade.

Horn scored a controversial win over Pacquiao to win the WBO Welterweight belt.  The main event delivered a 2.4 overnight rating.

It will be interesting to see how it did up against the networks on Saturday as NBC showed a NASCAR event and Fox aired an MLB game.

It was the first event in a newly forged deal between Top Rank and ESPN.

Now I agree with that, Pac is too small for the Welterweights, Horn looked like a middleweight or super middleweight in there with a jr welter. But I dont see that happening, the only big fight after august will be craword and crawford would end manny’s career violently…..so….while i agree that it should happen, i think he either rematches Horn or retires….I lean towards retirement

By the way, once again, the payout was 10m for Manny, 500K for Horn. No doubt Horn’s next fight will be a 7 figure payday.

There is no way ESPN spent $10 million on a fight, so they better hope this did a massive buyrate in Australia, presumably it did similar numbers worldwide from TV that Pacquiaou pulls when he’s not fighting another superstar

I had Horn winning by a little, besides the 9ty round Manny looked lazy compared to his usual fighting style, age and underestimated the opposition and being a politician doesn’t help either.

Cutch, cable tv typically pays far less in rights fees than anything near that. It’s a package deal, but if we were to look at an actual number for the individual fight that for the card, it was probably no more than 3m. They may have brought in another 2-3m from the gate, sponsorship, int’l tv/ppv, but it still likely did not match the cost for the event.

Also, there’s no way Pacquaio’s purse was 10m. His last purse was 4m which was disclosed in Nevada. There’s no way it would jump that level against a no named fighter. This was just a promoter’s fictional number. It was probably close to the last purse.

Here goes d acting like he’s in the back managing the books.

Crazy how worked up someone gets over a sport he doesn’t like.

  6. d on July 4th, 2017 9:19 AM

I wasn’t worked up at all, and what’s ironic you are saying this considering you’ve dedicated yourself to t.rolling under every mma article on here, on a site called mmapayout, where you hate mma.

  7. fight fan on July 4th, 2017 9:27 AM

Not true d, maybe I should show you pics of my UFC heavy bag and receipts of PPV’s I’ve bought over the years. The UFC claimed to be about fighting and making the best matchups, then they turned into a WWE style league where their favorite fighters get the pushes based off their looks.

Boxing is global, has any UFC sold 9Ok seats this year in a stadium? Or ever? Lol I’ll wait.

  8. Wil on July 4th, 2017 11:13 AM

And to add to that, Pacquaio will get a percentage of Filpino tv, and Horn gets a percentage of the gate, with over 51,000+ will raise his pay. These numbers are according to boxing journalist Dan Raphael of ESPN.
But I am sure the crackpot childish conspiracy theories will continue to swirl

Arum got huge site fee from suncorp…they want to promote brisbane to the world as a tourist destination…what better way than boxing on espn and shown around the world…with the controversy even more talks…..thats why you see roach, bradley etc….talk about how good the city was

  12. Cutch on July 4th, 2017 1:25 PM

So nobody cares about the fight then? Just made up business talk, should Manny retire? Try and get a rematch, perhaps fight Crawford and then Arum might make Crawford a PPV star if he dominates Manny.

I think Crawford would easily beat the Manny I seen on Saturday and it would be worthy of being a PPV.

Why have it on PPV when it can be on basic cable? I just dont get that mindset.

I think pacman leaves 3 months of senate duty to train and see the result then you can gauge whats next….he almost got horn in the 9th and horn struggles in weight so this guy is probably 154 going to 140 pacman can ko a lot of fighters….he is 5-6 135 frame

“Why have it on PPV when it can be on basic cable? I just dont get that mindset.”

Because ppv generates more money. Why is this a complicated matter.

Also what is conspiratorial about me pointing out Pacquaio’s last disclosed purse as 4m and pointing out the dubious nature of him being paid 10m for a subsequent bout where there is zero evidence to verify? FYI, Philipino tv isn’t big money.

  18. d on July 4th, 2017 2:58 PM

Fight Fan, you are clearly lying, all you do here is t.roll. Every mma article you rant about “McTapper” or WME’s business debt.

Also, where are you getting this theory that the UFC used to be about the best matchups? Combat sports has always been about who makes you the most money. This is nothing new. Some examples- UFC 48 having Ken Shamrock headline the card against Kimo, with the hw title fight on the undercard. Ortiz after his title run headlining cards with title fights on the undercard. Hughes vs a washed up Royce Gracie. BJ Penn getting a title fight against Hughes without competing at ww prior. Couture moving up to fight Sylvia for the hw title without a hw win in years. Brock Lesnar getting fast tracked to a title fight, etc. Same thing happens in boxing too. These promotions are businesses. Nothing has changed.

FYI: d has been blocked due to multiple reader complaints and violating our anti tro.lling policy.

When d accuses other people of tro.lling….LOL.

  20. d on July 4th, 2017 3:52 PM

“Speakman” aka “C” aka “Keef” aka “M” aka 400 other names while in denial about all of them. Haha.

  21. Wil on July 4th, 2017 4:10 PM

Speakman, how is he posting again? Leopards definitely dont change their spots. Even the other mma only fans on here seem to avoid the guy. Oh well….until someone takes action just treat him like that annoying brother’s kid who shows up at every holiday.

  22. Speakman on July 4th, 2017 4:17 PM

Will, Desperate d uses multiple proxy servers to dodge being banned, LOL. His presence is a tro.ll against the payout staff. So much for accusing others of tro.lling an mma website. And he thinks his alias charge carries weight, LOL.

  23. Wil on July 4th, 2017 4:21 PM

He is literally the only poster on here who acts like he does. Whether folks prefer mma or prefer boxing, i simply dont see anyone else acting like a petulant child like he does. And the interesting thing about it, he posts more under boxing specific articles….i check every single article this website posts and there are mma specific ones he doesnt even bother with.

  24. d on July 4th, 2017 4:21 PM

The level of delusion from the boxing t.rolls here is mind boggling they have zero self awareness and seem to be very cranky, although I’m glad I helped a couple unite with Wil and C…I mean Speakman…..I mean M…… etc. Haha.

  25. d on July 4th, 2017 4:24 PM

Wil thinks Topps doesn’t t.roll on here…ie, the end of any credibility he ever had.

  26. Speakman on July 4th, 2017 4:51 PM

    Good points wil.

  27. Wil on July 4th, 2017 5:15 PM

I think he really gets emotional and set off when boxing gets high ratings….i think thats when he is at his worst.

You lifeless trolls are still on here bashing mma and marking out for boxing? How sad and pathetic! I haven’t been on here in years and you clowns are still at it! I guess you must be content with your miserable lives outside of this site, that trolling takes such a priority to do it for so many years!

Got something to say?
