Premier Boxing Champions posted its worst ratings on NBC drawing just 1.24 million viewers in overnights per Television By Numbers.
The card featured Errol Spence, Jr. against Chris Algieri with Spence scoring the victory.
The event, which aired from 8:30-11pm ET drew a 0.3 rating in the adult 18-49 demo and a 1 share.
The PBC on NBC December 12th card drew 1.85 million viewers.
Payout Perspective:
On the other end of the watching spectrum, while the UFC on Fox won the night in the A18-49 demo, PBC on NBC put on its worst rating since airing on the network. This has to be a big disappointment considering it is trying to push young stars like Errol Spence, Jr. The overnight ratings reflect show that despite the shuffled UFC card, it has established a set audience that will watch the event regardless of the matchups. As for boxing, it has yet to produce something like this to maintain ratings.
Joey Garcia says
a continual 1-3 million viewers from when an “attraction” competes. The upside might be double that when an “attraction” for example (Danny Garcia) fights another Keith Thurman or name (attraction). And the downside is some of the subpar ratings that have taken place recently. Silently those shows breed bigger fights.
Boxing is an American staple that has grossed Quadrillions over 20th and 21st centuries. It’s great to see it back on network television. There have been some great fights so far. Congratulations to Al Haymon for putting this together.

Wow, is that bad. That is historically bad. How can you draw that low of ratings on a network, prime time event? Obviously this didn’t have bigger names, but still this is atrocious. They don’t have much time left running this league.
PBC = massive financial loss.
The Greatest says
Good showing for an up n comer like Errol Spence especially with the busy Saturday full of sporting events. Also these numbers arent final. It will go up

They were competing with alot of sporting events on at the same time.
There was one point when PBC, UFC, and Glory were all on at the same time. Then add MLB, the NHL Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, and I think even soccer was on.
Final ratings arent in but yea these certainly werent good, but I wouldnt say atrocious, until we see what the final ratings are but when it comes to the pure sport of it, the PBC card was hands down better than the UFC card. That UFC card was bunk.

Errol spence has to start somewhere….1.2M watched and with spence performance…all writers are comparing him to pacman….he has introduced himself to the public…as a future star! and he’s not yet a champ….

Infomercials get better ratings. How much will they go up? Not much to the point where it makes it much better. These are atrocious ratings.

Hahahahahahaha. UFC UFC UFC!!! YUP!!! He finally admitted it without realizing it!!!

The overwhelming majority of the population disagrees. MMA is much more entertaining and the card from Saturday was more exciting than the understandably un-watched PBC card.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Even Tops is having trouble spinning this one. He can’t take it. Hahahaha.
1.2m…….on networks equal box office poison!!
HAHAHAHA!!!

Errol has more upside than this, especially after this performance. It’s not the burst-on-the-scene he was hoping for, but it was his first real competition. Now that people know he’s the real deal, and if he continues to fight good opponents, his numbers should increase.
Fight Fan says
D if MMA is so much bigger how come may pac sold 4.4 mil?
d says
I don’t know what is more impressive, the dedication of boxing fans in their attempt to spin the present numbers or their obsession with a fight’s success that happened almost a year ago with two boxers who are retired that will never happen again in the sport?
Fight Fan, what is your excuse going to be at the end of the year when mma once again does more buys, and not only that, they have at least the top 3 selling ppvs this year? Just curious what your angle will be for that? I’m guessing you will bring up May-Pac again, as you will for the next decade. Hahaha.
fight fan says
D no excuse needed when MMA has a PPV every month lol.
Boxing has the top 3 PPV’s ever and MMA has had years to attempt to beat that and has not. The ship has stalled my friend.
Diego says
fight fan – nice try at reverse psychology. If MMA has a PPV every month, you would expect average PPVs to be lower than boxing which only has a few PPVs per year, not the other way around. The UFC model is to do steady business on each PPV, not to try to have a fight of the century followed by nothing.

Low numbers for a PBC on an NBC or a FOX, it should never be any lower than 2m viewers. Going up against NBA playoffs, NHL, UFC on Fox, etc certainly didnt help, but what also didnt help was the total lack of promotion for this card. There was virtually no advertising, no appearances of fighters on today shows, no nothing. Shame too, was a damn good card and Spence is headed to true stardom off that perfomance. He cleared over 200K for that fight, not bad for a contender, I suspect his next fight will break 7 figures or close to it. IF there is one thing I really dont like about DiBella promotions is just that, the lack of promotion.

Diego, well said brother. That was a star making performance against a legitimate world champion all be it at Jr. Welter. I am willing to bet that Kell Brook either vacates his title or gets stripped of it rather than face Spence, who looks like he may be the next Sugar Ray Leonard.

by the way, well said Joey, well said. Going back to the 1800s Marquis of Queensbury Rules of the modern era of pugilism. The good thing now is that we are seeing so many new nations get into the mix such as Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Denmark, Finland, even China and India have joined the ranks of the Sweet Science. Boxing is definitely more “global” now than it ever has been.

There’s the next excuse. Hahaha.
MMA has not been doing ppv as long as boxing. MMA didn’t even start getting mainstream recognition until 2005 when TUF came along. Since that time, they’ve dominated the ppv industry. Also, as I’ve pointed out, when the banner promotions attempted to do more ppvs, like they did in 2014 with around 8, they actually wound up selling less buys than they did the year prior. That debunks your delusional theory.

Errol Spence looked amazing….he could really help build up some new boxing hype in the US. Also gotta love the Dude Wipes logo on his ass! The UFC sponsorship players jumping over for NBC exposure.
