UFC 196 attendance, gate and bonuses

March 5, 2016

UFC 196 drew an attendance of 14,697 for a gate of 8.1 million viewers.  The bonuses went to Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz and Miesha Tate.

McGregor and Diaz drew Fight of the Night.  Diaz earned another Performance Bonus for his rear-naked choke of McGregor.  Tate earned her Performance Bonus for here RNC of Holly Holm.

The 14,697 attendance and gate of $8.1 million.  Attendance is the lowest of the last three UFC events featuring McGregor.

UFC 194: 16,516, $10.1 million

UFC 189: 16,019, $7.2 million

The numbers were announced at the post-fight press conference.

Payout Perspective:

It was an entertaining night of fights with the two biggest on the card delivering upsets.  The attendance figure and gate should be expected as it is hard to keep going back to Vegas for cards.  Of course, they’ll be back next month.  There were certainly other fighters with some great performances but the top two fights were the best and delivered the best finishes tonight.

Another one of Whites hype jobs taken out. Well done to Diaz, hope he makes the most of it. Well done to Tate, finally. Sad to see Holm lose, such a class act.

  2. d on March 6th, 2016 1:23 AM

Ko’ing Aldo in 13 seconds and putting Mendes away is no hype. I don’t see him getting past Edgar, but other than Frankie, McGregor is the best fighter at 145.

  6. jf on March 6th, 2016 5:53 AM

@ D The flash KO of Aldo is a result of the latter acting like a headless idiot. He had everything to beat McGregor. An out of shape Mendes who was gassing at the end of the first round beat the shit out of Conor for the whole fight until he got caught and fight was VERY rapidly ended.

He’s excellent for sure, but he’s been an extremely lucky guy too with all the right cards falling just in place where he wanted them. We’ll see how things will go in a revenge match against Aldo and a fight against a ready and hungry Edgar.

But no matter what happens from now on, Conor’s mystique and aura is gone, he will never look and be the same again.

  7. Wil on March 6th, 2016 8:25 AM

Was Weidman a white hype job? I dont think he ever had the dana white support behind him like van zant, northcutt, rousey, and mcgregor did….weidman wasnt blonde, that seems to be the prerequisite

It feels like the UFC is getting bigger than ever the the gates don’t reflect that.

This may have been the biggest PPV, tho. Maybe not. I can’t wait til the estimates start coming out.

I’m just always surprised that the UFC is so big now but they don’t hit numbers they were hitting years ago when they were more fringe.

Wil, that’s a great point. Anderson Silva is a blonde as well. You know, the guy who White called the greatest fighter ever.

  11. d on March 6th, 2016 9:49 AM

Joe, yet they are hitting the numbers that they were years ago at a higher price point. They never did 3 ppvs within a roughly 4 month span that went over 1m buys.

This ppv almost certainly hit 1m buys. There was a ton of interest from casuals.

Interesting night of fights and turn of events. Im sure this PPV will do just fine, but no doubt DW and company did not sleep well last night. DW is on record saying he “hates the business side of Holm vs Tate” as he believed Holm/Rousey 2 would do 2Million buys.
    http://www.mmafighting.com/2016/3/4/11158926/dana-white-i-absolutely-hate-the-business-side-of-holly-holm-vs
Throw that idea out the window now. McGregor stock went right down as the hype train derails. Tuf night for UFC brass. I wonder whats in store for UFC 200? McGregor Vs Aldo? If thats the case hopefully Mystic Mac isn’t injured. Nice to see Diaz get a big win and “move the needle”.

UFC is peaking now, boxing peaked 30 years ago.

  15. d on March 6th, 2016 10:39 AM

The truth is right now, White and co. should be very happy that Holm was exposed because it means Rousey will likely get her title back and hold it for another long stretch of time.

HAHA you guys are seriously crazy with these comments. The hate for each others sports is ridiculous. If you’re a boxing fan do you really not like watching Mcgregor fight??? Really?? The guys entertainment. Yes his stock just plummeted but it was fun while it lasted. Now if you’re an MMA fan do you really not like watching GGG fight??? Boxing and MMA can both be extremely boring or extremely entertaining it just depends who is fighting and what the matchup is. Kovalev-Ward, Canelo-GGG, Garcia-Thurman/Porter, Brook-Spence, Crawford-Postol/Broner, Wilder-Fury, Jack-DeGale, Rigondeaux-Frampton/Santa Cruz, Cotto-Marquez, and others (i can’t think of right now). And that’s just boxing. In MMA you got Jones/Cormier 2, Mcgregor/Aldo 2 or Mcgregor/edgar, Ronda/Holm 2, Weidman/Rockhold 2 or even if Jones moves up to HW. So much entertainment in combat sports right now and you guys are so arrogant you don’t give yourself the opportunity to enjoy both. Truly sad

  23. MMAtruth on March 6th, 2016 1:49 PM

Guys the UFC is far from throwing in the towel.. if anything they have to do a hard re-calibrate, and develop new stars. Its evident the key to success is getting a fighter that can talk the talk AND walk the walk. Talk is a huge part of it, just ask Conor and Ronda. A talker and no walker is Chael, and he did well (and still does for himself). On the flip side guys that can walk and are elite (ie. GSP and Silva) and don’t talk shit, take YEARS to turn into stars. Look at Aldo, he sold terribly until he got the right opponent who could talk. If Jon Jones turned to the dark side, he would be the UFCs biggest star. He still could, who knows.

UFC needs to move their eggs out of the Ronda and Conor basket and start pushing other fighters, just like Diaz said at the post-fight conference.

  24. tops E on March 6th, 2016 2:04 PM

Connor spin…he was hitting a bigger man….hahahaha..what?he is now the underdog? Instead of him being given an opponent 12 days…so he could win…for sure….dw favorite

  25. Wil on March 6th, 2016 2:45 PM

Boxing peaked during the so called “golden age” from the Dempsey era through the Joe Louis era.
And D, I was referring to Dana White protected fighters, of which guys like Weidman, Silva, Jones never seemed to be.

  26. Wil on March 6th, 2016 3:04 PM

MMAtruth, you nailed it. The UFC is far from over, they have attained acceptance with the sports journalist crowd, and based on demographics, appeal more to a majority in the USA than they ever have, even if they are not pulling the same ratings they did in the early days of the UFC on Fox era. And also agree that McGregor’s popularity had about 85% to do with his ability to talk and promote a fight rather than his prowess in the octagon.

  27. Wil on March 6th, 2016 3:06 PM

And of course I agree with Dunlap, this going after boxing by a couple of the mma only guys and this going after mma by a couple of the boxing only guys….I will never understand it. First and foremost, what are you winning or gaining out of putting the other sport down? Why isnt it pointed at kickboxing? Thai Boxing? Olympic Judo or Tae Kwon Do? Why not baseball? Football? Hockey? Nascar? etc etc….just seems childish to me….and a couple of you guys REALLY get into it like the preservation of oxygen and gravity depend on it. (shrugs shoulders…)

  28. Wil on March 6th, 2016 3:39 PM

I missed your first post, MMAtruth, but again, I like your style of posting. You are right, last night was ultra successful and made alot of folk alot of money, but it does throw a monkey into the wrench….conors stock falls, considerably by getting stopped in 2 rounds by a 2 week replacement. Holm’s stock fell as she wasnt able to ride the success of beating Rousey. Rousey’s stock has fallen in how she was absolutely handled by Holm who really is a boxer/kickboxer who trained in how to stay off the ground and fight defensively rather than offensively on the ground with winklejohn-jackson. Conor will never be able to bring up Mayweathers name again in order to sell tickets/ppvs without looking like a total clown (as did Rousey from doing the same.) That is the whole think about the hard falls the White backed fighters take, when they fall, they fall heard since they have so much backing behind them.

  29. turd on March 6th, 2016 5:40 PM

last night cost the ufc a bit of money in the short haul rousey vs holm 2 would have been huge.

connor was exposed and there is no way he would ever be champ at lw.

if connor loses his net fight he is done as a top draw.

i dont like jon jones, but it is amazing he has stayed on top for as long as he has

and has fought just about every style out there. the people dana wants to be

his starts have all fallen in the past 4 monthes. the treatment that sage northcutt

gets over other fighters is pure disgusting.

  30. Wil on March 6th, 2016 6:06 PM

Agreed sir, I never liked how hard they were pushing Northcutt, I was actually insulted by it. It was akin to being sold a boy band or something. They found a pretty blonde kid from my city and pushed him hard. They were doing the same with Van Zant as well. Its a pattern by Dana “MMA Don King” White. Agreed, if McGregor loses two back to back, or even 2 of his next 3 or 4, he is absolutely done as a big draw. Often you get one time to lose in mma and there goes your drawing power because that aura of invincibility is gone. Holm wont be a draw again either. Her best option would now be to sign a contract with Golden Boy, DiBella, K2, Matchroom, Top Rank, etc and try to headline on Showtime, HBO, PBC, or go for a fight with Braekhus, who has become a big money female fighter in the Nordic scene.

  31. d on March 6th, 2016 8:21 PM

HAHAHAHA!!! Another blockbuster UFC and all the hate comes out. They are killing it! Everyone is talking about mma and no one is talking about boxing.

“2 ppvs that hit the 1m mark over the last 2 years is consistently? Lowest attended fight for mcgregor, not to mention he got beat by someone who didn’t even have a camp? dw is a clown selling that snake oil hype.”

Guaranteed this one hit 1m and that would make 3 in the last roughly four months. Not to mention UFC 200 is going to hit another 1m plus. HAHAHA!! Yeah and the lowest attended McGregor ppv still does 8.1m gate beating basically anything boxing is going to put up this year. Haha.

“Does anyone even know what the next ppvs will be?
No one cares is the answer.”

Uh, Jones-Cormier and it will likely do more ppv buys and revenue than every boxing ppv this year. So if no one cares, then certainly no one cares about anything in boxing.

“I won, like i always do.”

You’ve lost since the day you were born.

That PBC failure is killing you.

It is entertaining watching you guys all self destruct.

  32. d on March 6th, 2016 8:23 PM

“Greatest you got any extra cigars? This definitely calls for one”

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Record setting ppv buys equals cigars all around for the mma scene, not so much for boxing though.

Oh, and yeah, you are a real mma fan. Nice try.

  33. d on March 6th, 2016 8:36 PM

“UFC needs to move their eggs out of the Ronda and Conor basket and start pushing other fighters, just like Diaz said at the post-fight conference.”

Why on Earth would they move on from either? You move on when they stop selling and both of them will do over 1m ppv buys for both of their next fights. So to back off of that would be crazy.

“And D, I was referring to Dana White protected fighters, of which guys like Weidman, Silva, Jones never seemed to be.”

Right, which is again why he called Silva over and over again the greatest fighter of all time and pushed a ton of money into promoting the guy. Also, where are you getting this Weidman nonsense from? The only guy he butted heads with is Jones and may not have promoted like others..

“even if they are not pulling the same ratings they did in the early days of the UFC on Fox era.”

Only that if you take into consideration the big picture: the amount of shows, etc, they actually are, and they are making more money than they were when the FOX deal started.

“Holm’s stock fell as she wasnt able to ride the success of beating Rousey. Rousey’s stock has fallen in how she was absolutely handled by Holm who really is a boxer/kickboxer who trained in how to stay off the ground and fight defensively rather than offensively on the ground with winklejohn-jackson. ”

Of course Holm’s stock fell, as many people who comprehend the sport expected, she has no ground at all. How has Rousey’s stock fallen? She was more popular in defeat and she will win the title back from Tate in the Fall. If you think about it, this was a perfect scenario for her. Tate is an easier match up and even when she gets past Tate, the writing is on the wall for how to defeat Holm.

“Conor will never be able to bring up Mayweathers name again in order to sell tickets/ppvs without looking like a total clown (as did Rousey from doing the same.) That is the whole think about the hard falls the White backed fighters take, when they fall, they fall heard since they have so much backing behind them.”

Mayweather should never mention anyone’s name when it comes to actual fighting, because he never did it. He fought like a coward on a championship level. McGregor fights like a champ. He is a fighter, Mayweather was a runner. Rousey also had more finishes on a championship level than Mayweather ever had, she had more action in her Cat Zingano fight than Mayweather had in the majority of his career.

  34. d on March 6th, 2016 8:38 PM

“Holm wont be a draw again either. Her best option would now be to sign a contract with Golden Boy, DiBella, K2, Matchroom, Top Rank, etc and try to headline on Showtime, HBO, PBC, or go for a fight with Braekhus, who has become a big money female fighter in the Nordic scene.”

Although I agree she won’t be a big draw again, she will still make far more money in mma than in boxing or kickboxing. That is why she came to mma. That’s where the money is for women, and soon to be men too.

If selling out 3-4 shows a month (or atleast 90% capacity) is failing than I don’t know what success is. Fact is, I love boxing more than UFC, but boxing just isn’t doing that business right now. I mean ufc sold out a non-title fight on a WEDNESDAY in Atlantic City. Boxing would never do that, not even in a Ballroom. I own a bar, and get the monthly ppv’s there and it’s doing great business for me. I bought the HBO boxing package last year; I knew it would fail business wise, but I thought with my heart. Didn’t re-up for 2016. I love boxing and have been to over 10 fights, DVR all the HBO fights (won’t watch Haymon showcases) but you boxing fans are making jokes outa us. Stop hating and give credit where credit is do. Oh yea, I’m personal friends with Darrion Caldwell. We were at capacity for his fight on Friday, n near it on Saturday for 196. Boxing would NEVER give me back to back nights where I could showcase it, let alone make money. But watch out for this man. He’ll be the best BE in the world in 6-12 months. Mark my words. Dana better get on that
