Floyd Mayweather will face Andre Berto on Saturday, September 12 in Las Vegas in his final fight under his Showtime contract. Mayweather-Berto will be on Showtime PPV.
Despite murmurs that Mayweather would fight on network TV, the event will be on Showtime PPV for $74.95HD/$64.95SD – a substantial decrease from the $99.95HD price tag this past May.
Mayweather-Berto is not the only boxing PPV this fall. Gennady Golovkin vs. David Lemieux will take place on HBO PPV on Saturday, October 17th. It will be Golovkin’s first PPV event as headliner. One might expect the price point to be $59.99HD/$49.99SD which seems to be the going rate for PPV nowadays.
Although not formally announced, there is a strong presumption that we will see Miguel Cotto taking on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in November. Due to his shoulder injury, Manny Pacquiao will sit out the rest of 2015 and it is anticipated that he will fight twice in 2016.
Although not a marquee fight, Shane Mosley will take on Ricard Mayorga later this month on PPV.
Payout Perspective:
Darren Rovell anticipates that Mayweather will sell 1.6 million PPV buys for Mayweather-Berto. While there is a lot of discontent with Mayweather on PPV, he is still a draw for enough boxing fans. It’s clear he won’t hit 4.4 million buys as he did in May and we shall see how he will do with a relatively unexciting opponent. As for the rest of the boxing PPV season, will the influx of PPVs help or hurt the current state of boxing viewership? With boxing on as much as MMA on TV nowadays, will boxing PPVs still produce decent buy rates? We shall see.

How much does the whole roster of the ufc get paid for one whole year? Bigger or smaller than mayweathers earning this year?
Diego says
Any bets on 1.6 million as an over/under? I can’t see this fight doing that well. His performance against Pacman was panned. I don’t know anyone who bought his last PPV that is planning to buy this one.

Tops is in full spin mode. Money….DOWN THE TOILET! HAHAHA!!! This fight will be his worst selling ppv in 8 years. Around 700k buys- watch. It will bomb considering how much it costs to promote. This will mark the beginning of the end of big ppvs for boxing.
d says
Darren Rovell is a boxing paid fraud. He takes his information directly from Mayweather or Arum and he trolls mma writers. He is an idiot who never fact checks anything and his numbers are nearly always false.
d says
Think about how delusional it would be to predict 1.6m for this fight- with better opponents, outside of those 2 big fights with Showtime, Mayweather did under 900k buys with his 3 other Showtime ppvs. Maidana I & II and Guerrero were all hovering just below 900k, yet with Berto he is going to do 1.6m?? Delusions. 700k at best after that miserable performance against Pac.
Chris says
What else can Tops say, he cant talk about this fight being good, cant talk about it being competitive, cant talk about it being a fight fans want to buy or he will buy.
No bullshit who would actually buy this fight? WHo is dropping 75 on another Floyd 12 round boring dec?
Everyone in boxing is mocking this shit.
and anyone who thinks this is FLoyd’s last fight is an idiot, they are hyping that up to get you to buy this horrible fight thinking its last time.
Bet you anything he’s back in May or Sept 2016 going for 50-0. his contract would be up, HBO and SHowtime would both bid to get that fight. Not a chance in hell he’s retiring after this fight.
Wouldnt 1.6 mill be like his 4th highest PPV all time behind Manny and canelo and Oscar ?
Jason Cruz says
@Chris, et al. The ESPN link showed Rovell’s projections. No idea how he got to 1.6M. My belief is that has to much lower. Let’s subtract 1M from that number. If it does 600K, it would be a success. Also, you’ll likely not hear an “official” PPV buy rate for this.
d says
I can tell you how he got to 1.6m- either Ellerbe or Mayweather told him that figure.

Lots of comments but the question is which is bigger the whole pay of the ufc roster in a year and mayweathers pay for this year?any info Jason? ….we hear all the hype then. this coming from rousey herself she gets paid 50x lower and 2 ufc fighters meeting each other in a bus….no seat left and they forced to sit beside each other hahahahaha….they should get al haymon to represent them and deal with dw….ali act needed in mma!
saldathief says
Yea I just dont see people paying to see him fight anymore he hasn’t had an exciting fight in a while. better fights to piss 80 bucks on
Logical says
I was hoping it would be on Network TV, there are two major things going against this PPV; 1. Nobody cares about Berto as an opponent, he has fought only 4 times in 4 years and has lost half of those fights, Mayweather averages about 1Mill buys when nobody cares about his opponent (Vs. Cotto = 1.5M Vs. Canelo = 2.2M Vs. Pacquiao = 4.4M) He needs a name to get to that 1.6M and he just pissed a lot of people by choosing Berto, 2. After the boring Pacquiao fight is anyone really going to give him more money after feeling cheated from that fight? If it does 1M I say consider it a success.

What a joke of a match, and for that price.
No wonder boxing ain’t what it used to be while MMA keeps growing and has been sent on fire with great fights.
But, but, but… Mayweather makes more money!
Lol. Irelevant argument.

“1.2m

The Gayest says these ridiculous things to convince himself.
d says
Logical, against an low profile opponent, Mayweather actually averages under 900k since he’s been with Showtime.
d says
Tops is scrambling to do anything he can to deny the reality than boxing is heading for a shitter and mma is having arguably their biggest year ever.
By the way, you should really stop sourcing people like Floyd Gayweather, it just makes you look like a complete moron to people who don’t already know you are a complete moron.

[1] Did you know the worst bench warmer on the worst Women’s NBA team makes double what the average entry-level UFC fighter does?
[2] How about this, there was a UFC event in 2013 in which, apparently, the highest guaranteed pay on the card was $30k/$30k.
[3] Did you know, a fighter received only $12,000 in disclosed pay while fighting for a title and main-eventing a Pay-Per-View, this year?
[4] The median average wage for a top 15 fighter in the UFC is just $30,500 per year.
[5] Floyd Mayweather, in the 12 months between summer 2011 and summer 2012, made approximately four times more in guaranteed salary than the entire UFC roster combined. He fought twice.
d says
The worst bench warmer on the worst WNBA team makes 10x what the average entry level banner promoted boxer makes.
How about this- there was a ppv a few years back when a main card fighter named Paul Harness was paid 2k as a feature on the main card for the ppv.
Disclosed pay numbers for title fights are worthless figures because they are paid to promote the fight, they most likely receive additional bonuses as well for headlining the card.
The median average wage for a top 15 fighter in the UFC given is a flat out lie seeing how they are not privy to ppv audit rights, nor are they of any other undisclosed bonuses.
Floyd Mayweather releases his own numbers with no one fact checking them where they are nearly always clearly blatantly false, not to mention of course, Mayweather also makes more guaranteed money than every boxer in the world combined with the exception of the top few ppv stars. He also promotes his own fights, which makes guaranteed money in his case very amusing for many obvious reasons.
Any more bullshit you want to shovel?

The Greatest says
Paul Harness? D you tried that 6 months ago. Thats the only guy u bring up. Some guy made 2K on an undercard of a Marquez event and D thinks thats worse then the UFC constantly under paying there fighters.
PBC on Bounce TV did 1.6m viewers in which was the most watched telecast in Bounce TV history, which is crazy good for who fought.
The numbers are weird tho because it says it peaked at 663k but maybe they are counting ppl who watched through their website.
They put an encore after and the total brought it over 2m views counting both telecasts.
d says
Under paying their fighters??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Boxing undercard fighters make less. Mayweather’s prelimers make as low as 2-3k. No contracted UFC fighter makes less than 8k now.
You have to stop lying, it will help you become a human being some day if you start to tell the truth. Every number and figure you post is a lie.
tops E says
Dw a square before he became a tough guy in mma — mayweather…….hahahahaha…fanboys following a square
The Greatest says
Mayweather prelims dont make that low. Maybe 1 guy did one time but not on a constant basis.
You forget to mention that upwards to 4 guys on a Mayweather card will make over $1m.
UFC fighters never make that, but many on every card will make 8k.
d says
Yes they do. Boxing prelimers on any level rarely make 10k. They also aren’t insured and their travel/lodging isn’t paid for. Most boxers pay to fight. Boxing = bad business.
The Greatest says
Most mma fighters pay to fight too.
Were talkin the upper levels not the random promotion down the street because even then, the lower boxers make more than the lower mma fighters
Fight Fan says
D, you got no clue what you’re talking about, I got a friend who fights with top rank and has fought on PPV undercards that were before the live broadcast and he is paid to fight as well as has his accommodations taken care of. Don’t try to act like you know how it is through the boxing world.
d says
No, hold on, most UFC fighters do not pay to fight- most banner promoter boxers do.
You are lying again.
d says
Fight Fan, maybe you were dreaming that at your local Buffalo Wild Wings.
It is rare for the banner promoters to cover these things in boxing. If you are event telling the truth(which I doubt you are), it is not common for that to happen. Also, they are 100% not insured like UFC fighters are.
