GGG draws 1.3M viewers on HBO

May 19, 2015

ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports that Saturday night’s HBO Boxing event featuring Gennady Golovkin taking on Willie Monroe, Jr. drew an average HBO subscriber viewership of 1.338 million with a peak at 1.474 million.

GGG dropped Monroe throughout the fight eventually earning the stoppage in the 6th round.  In addition, Flyweight Roman Gonzalez obliterated Edgar Sosa in two rounds scoring a KO.  The fight drew 961,000 viewers with a peak at 1.018 million per Rafael.

Saturday’s performance was his second-best on HBO and the third-best rating this year (behind Klitschko and Canelo fights) for HBO boxing:

GGG Fights on HBO

November 2013 vs. Curtis Stevens 1.41M viewers (fight only)

July 2104 vs. Daniel Geale 984,000 viewers (overall show drew 758,000)

October 2014 vs. Marco Antonio Rubio 1.3M viewers (fight only)

February 2015 vs. Martin Murray 862,000 viewers (fight only)

On another note, TruTV’s boxing event which is used to promote the fights the next night drew 288,000 viewers on Friday.  Considering that many people do not know of TruTV until NCAA tournament time, this is a very good showing.

Payout Perspective:

The ratings for the fights which lasted a little over one hour reflect the fact that the sport is in a period of great interest.  Furthermore, GGG is set to be a star based on his fight style.  Perhaps more impressive is the flyweight fight which preceded GGG scored a high viewership rating.  It shows that either fight fans believed that GGG would be the only fight on the telecast or they are interested in watching more of the sport.

    Not bad at all.

What a surprise, the ratings from the previous week dropped in half.

Goes to show you how much of a joke boxing is, when the best fighter can’t get fights against any decent opponents.

1.3 million paid boxing fans that spend money, Nothing new

Lol @ MMAPayout instigating the MMA v Boxing feud by posting boxing info.

“With its singular focus on the business of MMA, the site provides its professional audience with a convenient one stop shop for all the action taking place in a fast expanding industry with in-depth insight and analysis provided by its professional staff.”

    Riiight 😀

D has no clue how the game of boxing runs, how fighters are developed and how a sport can generate a 4,4 million ppv. oh and obviously the UFC has no fucking clue either!

Good for Jason! being a fair and honest journalist, showing all combat sports and allowing us to be uncensored in our views and opinions! Hats off to him!

I think it’s fine to show boxing stuff. Nothing wrong with that. Boxing is worthy of being followed and GGG is one hell of a boxer.

But to clarify a comment up there. I don’t think “1.3 million paid” to watch this fight. HBO is a subscriber service. HBO has around 30 million people who pay money to get it each month ($5 to $25 a month?) People are already paying a monthly fee to get the service…so they didn’t extra for this fight. It was part of their deal.

I have no clue if 1.4 million is a good number. Game of Thrones gets like 8 to 10 million, so take that for what it’s worth.

Don’t get me wrong. I like having the boxing info. But seeing how the comment section always devolves makes me not even want them to worry about boxing on this site.

    Is boxingpayout.com taken?

matt- Most people get HBO for Boxing.By the way did you notice how D just trolled without being provoked? whose the troller?

Saldathief- Arum says the mayweather/Pac ppv’s are actually higher and in about one month will be adjusted. probably to about 4.7 million (sweet Lord sweet science)

1.3 to watch GGG fght a no name. sweet lord can you imagine what canelo/ GGG would get. Thats 1 million ppv buys easy. GGG will be a huge star for the next 2-4 years. Felix Verderjo is sick as well. he fights next month. he’ll be a welterweight in 2 years and a junior welterweight in the future.

I’ll respectively disagree. Most people get HBO through the various deals offered by cable providers. Those promo packages and ‘most’ people keep it for the shows. Programming like the Wire, the Sopranos, Band of Brothers, Entourage, and of course, Game of Thrones.

Those kind of numbers on a PREMIUM network are quite good really–big difference on viewership between channels on basic cable, expanded/standard or premium. What makes it even more impressive is that GGG with mostly a hardcore fan base can pull those kind of numbers on a premium channel, it shows he is gaining ground with casuals and we will most likely see him on PPV soon.

Fagbusiness, it is a response to dealing with idiots like you constantly trolling on this site. You are just mad someone is trolling you now. If you idiots didn’t troll on here, I wouldn’t even post under the boxing articles.

You again source Bob Arum. Enough said. HAHAHA! If I were to source Dana White, can you image what you idiots would say?

The problem with your prediction is it is a fight that probably will never happen because guys like Canelo and Cotto are terrified of fighting Golovkin.

  13. d on May 19th, 2015 1:52 PM

Sal is so delusional, he thinks hbo views are the equivalent to ppv buys. Like I said, he is mmapayout’s crazy drunken uncle.

  14. d on May 19th, 2015 1:54 PM

And anyone who thinks most people get HBO or Showtime for boxing is clearly a moron. Look at the ratings Matt provided. It is quite the opposite. People get HBO for the shows/movies, the sports dept is far behind.

  17. d on May 19th, 2015 2:30 PM

Looks good maybe in the bizarro world. How many ppvs have anyone from that list sold as an A? Rousey sold more than all of them combined.

here ya go kids! Boxing fans that have jobs buy HBO and Showtime! I personally have both and consider all their programing other than boxing complete garbage, thats just me. I also bought showtime for strike force, go figure. No Boxing= no subscription. You can call it what you want 1.3 million paid viewers that buy ppv too. Everybody poo poos HBO/Showtime numbers, and jumps high about free ufc programming. Lets see what 187 does. I mean boxing is dead and the ufc has all the boxing fans right?? bahahahha

  20. d on May 19th, 2015 3:15 PM

They aren’t paid viewers and I didn’t realize that your welfare paid for Showtime/HBO. That must be new.

The BC just announced if cotto doesnt fight GGG after his fight in June they will strip him of his belt. does this mean he will fight GGG? No but the pressure is mounting on people to fight this guy.

  23. saldathief on May 19th, 2015 5:45 PM

haha D is a moron and doesn’t know what subscription TV is because his parents pay all his bills! Must be rough having a useless degree in some stupid subject, thinking you are all smart, and don’t have your shit together and still living at home with mommy, with a lame blogger job. hahahah free fight pass wont pay your bills D!

  24. d on May 19th, 2015 7:50 PM

Fagbusiness, you even admitted you troll on here because you don’t like mma. You along with all the other boxing fags on here instigate everything, or else I wouldn’t even be addressing you in the first place. The very fact that you are calling me a troll where you go onto a mma website just to troll and then when someone like me responds by trolling you, proves you idiots collectively are the ultimate trolls.

I’m not complaining at all. You are the one crying about it. I actually enjoy embarrassing you every time you make an idiotic comment.

Ward GGG won’t do a big ppv, even if the fight is signed which would be a long shot anytime soon. Pressure is mounting, but they don’t care, they want nothing to do with that guy.

  25. d on May 19th, 2015 7:51 PM

Sal is ranting once again, like the quack that he is.

  26. The Greatest on May 20th, 2015 11:15 PM

1.3m on HBO is better than 575k on FS1.

And forget Cotto fighting GGG. Cotto is gonna fight Canelo in the Fall and Canelo will beat him and well get Canelo/GGG in 2016.

  27. d on May 21st, 2015 7:21 AM

The Gayest likes to compare cable numbers to network numbers. Anyone comparing those two is a complete retard.

Got something to say?
