Canelo-Kirkland on HBO draws best rating since 2006

May 12, 2015

The Canelo Alvarez-James Kirkland fight drew 2.146 million HBO subscribers on Saturday night via Sports TV Ratings.  The average is the best since 2006 when Bernard Hopkins took on Antonio Tarver.

The fight was aided by the replay of the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao replay.  For those not willing to pay the $100 PPV, it was a chance to watch the fight.  The replay ran on both HBO and Showtime at the same time.  The replay ran first on HBO and was then followed by Canelo-Kirkland.

Tom Costello and Sports TV Ratings report the segment ratings on HBO.  The 2.146 million viewers occurred during the Canelo-Kirkland fight between 10:30-10:45pm ET.  It drew 1.18 million viewers between 9:09pm-9:57pm ET and 1.58 million viewers between 9:57pm-10:30pm ET.  The peak was at 2.296 million viewers.

Alvarez knocked out Kirkland in the third round of their fight. Dan Rafael reported that the attendance at Houston’s Minute Maid Park was 31,588. Rafael also reported that Kirkland made $1.3 million for the fight.  Alvarez’s pay was dependent on the percentage of the event which Rafael estimates at least $3.5 million.

Payout Perspective:

Great ratings and it seems fitting that Mayweather-Pacquiao “opened” for Canelo Alvarez since it’s apparent that Alvarez (along with GGG and maybe Terrence Crawford) is the next big money draw in the sport.  I’m sure you can debate the previous statement, but it’s clear that Canelo is a draw (and it certainly helps to have a strong Mexican following) and his fight on HBO proved that he is an exciting fighter.

Well, I guess that solves the “boxing is dead” argument.

Over 30,000 paid? Not bad… not bad AT ALL.

  3. Logical on May 12th, 2015 4:18 PM

Now this…. was a FIGHT! Plus it sets up a big fight with either GGG or Cotto. Either match-up will be great and will please the fans.

Good Lord again? This MMA ass beating doesnt end. Two weeks ago it was Klitschko nearly selling out the garden for fighting a tomotoe can. This week Canelo get 2.3 million peak. I’m sure everyone watching was over 60 off course. I mean this mma ass beating doesnt end. take it easy on the dry humpers sweet science. yes they punch like women and dry hump because their scared to fight but damn dont humiliate them. what are we doing this year 6 million or 7 million ppv buys? man i cant even imagin if pac was available to fight in the fall. that would be 8 million for boxing. if him and mayweather rematched boxing would do 9 million ppv buys this year. shits getting to damn easy. just too damn easy (head down and shaking)

  7. Saldathief on May 12th, 2015 7:48 PM

And the undercard got canceled haha

  8. d on May 12th, 2015 8:29 PM

Hahaha. All the morons that think this fight would have done even half of what it did had it not been for the big fight last week, are delusional.

Fagbusiness desperately clinging to this card that wasn’t even on ppv because it wouldn’t have drawn shit. The stand up dry humpers will have a short lived surge because of Mayweather-Pac, then in a few months, they will go right back down to the toilet numbers they were generating before.

Boxing isn’t going to break 5m ppvs this year, let alone the delusional figures you are throwing out there. They only have 2 guys who can sell them and one is on the shelf. The UFC on the other hand can sell a big ppv with a number of fighters.

Mayweather retiring in the Fall- can’t wait for the spin, when their ppv numbers go on life support! HAHAHA!!

  9. FightBusiness on May 12th, 2015 8:37 PM

d- “Boxing wont do 5 million ppv’s this year” the dumbest comment I ever heard. Mayweather fights in september faggot. thats 1 million right there. cotto vs canelo fight also. thats 800k minimum. i’m sure some other bullshit ppv will creep its little head also by the end of the year.

ufc dry humping is encouraged. the ref sits there looking with tissues in his back pocket while there legs are spread and there sniffing each others anuses. the ref breaks it up in boxing. none of that homo shit.

  10. FightBusiness on May 12th, 2015 8:38 PM

fyi. the mayweather vs pac fight did 1.1 million views. Canelo came on afterwards and it doubled. so no the replay didnt have to much to do with it. it still would have done over 1.6 million by itself. 31k in the stadium also.

  11. d on May 12th, 2015 8:54 PM

Boxing involves transexuals and homosexuals- precisely the type of sport that people like fagbusiness love. Boxers are encouraged to date their opponents after the fight, they neck with eachother, hug eachother, and grind with one another in the clinch.

You are delusional about the boxing numbers once again and 31k is meaningless. The only thing that matters is how much revenue.

  12. Saldathief on May 12th, 2015 9:03 PM

D is not only delusional but is a complete ass clown! D you got owned. Go away!!

  13. d on May 12th, 2015 9:05 PM

HAHAHA!! Sal loves Kevin Iole sources…..when they agree with his delusions! Since we are taking Leonard Ellerbe at his word, how about taking Dana White at his word when he leaks numbers to Iole? How about his 2.6m figure Iole reported from UFC 100? See how that works fuck face?

  14. saldathief on May 12th, 2015 10:07 PM

SHOWTIME AND HBO announced the numbers you moron. It really doesn’t matter, you cant fix delusional Good luck D don’t go away mad, just go away bahahahahahaha

  15. d on May 12th, 2015 10:07 PM

    More bad news for boxing:–box.html

Their only two draws will be done soon.

  16. d on May 12th, 2015 10:10 PM

The source came from Ellerbe in that article fuck face and even if Showtime/HBO announced those figures(which they didn’t there), that still carries zero weight. How frequently has Espinoza or the people at HBO/Arum lied about numbers? Happens all the time. Espinoza is still trying to claim Guerrero-Mayweather did 1m buys, which was clearly a lie as Rafael pointed out.

  17. d on May 12th, 2015 10:25 PM

The AP article that was written later claimed the numbers came from HBO/Showtime, not the Iole piece. HBO/Showtime have zero credibility though so this is again worthless.

  18. saldathief on May 12th, 2015 10:27 PM

Showtime and HBO are public companies you amateur, they have to reveal true figures , oh wait are they an LLC or a corporation, bahahahah Go to bed! tomorrow is another day . YOU LOST AGAIN! and again and again and again get use to it hahahahah

  19. saldathief on May 12th, 2015 10:27 PM
  20. d on May 12th, 2015 10:34 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! THEY DON’T HAVE TO RELEASE SHIT!! You fucking moron! Go find me the Gayweather-Guerrero ppv buys. They don’t release the buys you cock sucker. Rafael pointed this out. He called Espinoza out on his bullshit when he lied about the Guerrero fight. Espinoza claimed it went over 1m, and Rafael who has zero bias involved in that situation swore to the death that fight didn’t go over 900k.

You’ve never been correct about anything. You just rant and rave like a mental patient and you are proven wrong about everything.

  21. The Greatest on May 13th, 2015 2:09 AM

“Hahaha. All the morons that think this fight would have done even half of what it did had it not been for the big fight last week, are delusional.”

But I thought that fight killed Boxing? Which is it D? It killed it but brought in more fans for Canelos fight? That makes no sense.

“Go find me the Gayweather-Guerrero ppv buys….Espinoza claimed it went over 1m, and Rafael who has zero bias involved in that situation swore to the death that fight didn’t go over 900k.”

Just the other day you said Rafael is full of shit and cant be trusted. Once again you are making yourself look like an idiot.
Its also very amusing to see you try to argue ppv numbers on a fight that happened two years ago. Mayweather has had 4 ppvs since then and you are still trying to argue Mayweather-Guerrero numbers like anyone gives a shit.

  22. FightBusiness on May 13th, 2015 5:00 AM

D- D’s final game plan: call everyone else a liar and delusional and just say he is the only one to trust. he does this while holding a teddy bear in the corner of his room crying.

    Leave MMA Alone: (57 seconds)

  23. d on May 13th, 2015 5:20 AM

In the long run it did. In the short term everyone knew there was going to be a bump. Just the press, etc. Almost like a Plan 9 From Outer Space bump. Haha.

Where did I say Rafael was full of shit and can’t be trusted? You are just fabricating things as usual. I would say this- you have to check and see what he reports specifically. IE, if he is quoting someone else or if it is his source specifically. Nice try retard.

It really isn’t an argument it is a relevant fact to point out how carelessly these guys lie. The fact that you can’t see why that is significant goes to show what kind of idiot you are.

The Gayest’s gameplan after realizing his sport is on its last leg is to stalk people on a MMA website like the mental patient that he is.

  24. FightBusiness on May 13th, 2015 5:26 AM

d- if its a mma website why are they posting boxing and kickboxing articles.

  25. d on May 13th, 2015 5:54 AM

Fagbusiness, if it is not a mma website, then why do they call it MMAPAYOUT?

  26. Pink Pig on May 13th, 2015 8:10 AM

LOL. This girl is refuting the fact that MayPac did 4.4 MILLION buys?

Perfect! Just reflects the dumbness of ALL MMA fans.

  27. joe on May 13th, 2015 8:38 AM

    Lol. Not an MMA site?

    You’re drunk, go home.

  28. d on May 13th, 2015 9:02 AM

Kind of funny when retards with aliases acting like they are more than 1 person claim others are idiots.

That just shows the IDIOCY of all boxing fans. Learn how to use words in a functional sentence, moron.

  29. d on May 13th, 2015 9:03 AM

Sampson, are you going to start accepting Dana White numbers now?

  30. saldathief on May 13th, 2015 9:07 AM

Another huge weekend for boxing, what is that 3 in a row?. There is a great fight for the UFC sat and no one is talking about it. Dana is too busy talking about Rousey and Jones. Give us a fucking break!! 2 of the best lighter weight fighters Edgar and Faber and Dana is off in another world! The UFC is clearly clueless!
Its laughable! D quotes the highest UFC numbers but poo poos any high boxing number with no evidence or proof. There is no way he is that stupid! proves he is a paid troll for the UFC, how pathetic!! How pathertic is a company that would pay someone to lie on web sites. hahahh Boxing doesn’t need to lie ALL THE NUMBERS ARE THERE hahahahah

  31. d on May 13th, 2015 9:12 AM

Sal is progressively getting worse. He continues to act crazier with all of his rants on here. It’s only a matter of time….

  32. saldathief on May 13th, 2015 10:11 AM

D cant grip reality that mma is JR to boxing haha go on D

  33. saldathief on May 13th, 2015 10:13 AM

    Good read.”

Good read? Looks like a bunch of hypothetical bullshit.
You have to have money to lose money and thats one thing that MMA fighters cant experience.

  40. The Greatest on May 14th, 2015 2:06 AM

    Good read.”

-Hahahahahah the best part about this article is when you scroll down to the comments.
First comment says “MMA is dead”
How much money do you want to bet that D sees that and goes on there and trys to argue with the guy.
HAHAHAHA Oh my god D you are so gay.

  41. d on May 14th, 2015 8:00 AM

Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Manny and Floyd next!

Yeah, it says mma is dead because the you posted it you fucking idiot! HAHAHA!

  44. d on May 14th, 2015 9:52 AM

Hey SAL, YES THEY CAN YOU FUCKING IDIOT!! Showtime already did when they claimed an exaggerated number for Guerrero-Mayweather. If they were accessible to the public, someone would have published them by now you fucking retard.

Yeah, you just proved my point about Manny. It will happen much quicker for him. Sal is too stupid to even realize what he is arguing. HAHAHAHA!!

  45. The Greatest on May 14th, 2015 4:11 PM

  46. The Greatest on May 14th, 2015 4:13 PM

In 20 years when boxing is still selling ppvs, there will be a man named D whose gonna go “But what about Mayweather-Guerreros numbers……”

  47. d on May 14th, 2015 4:50 PM

The Gayest back with more of his delusions. When you prove him wrong, he just rants and comes up with theoretical delusions with zero validity behind them.

More like in 20 years when boxing doesn’t even exist anymore because it has been drastically declining in popularity for years- the Gayest will be bringing up Gayweather- Pacquaio.

Got something to say?
