UFC 169 Prelims: 933K viewers

February 4, 2014 by Jason Cruz 6 Comments

John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal reports that UFC 169 Prelims on FS1 received an average viewership of 933,000 viewers.  According to Ourand, it was the highest rated show on the network during Super Bowl week.

UFC Prelims on FS1

UFC 164                     809,000

UFC 165                     722,000

UFC 166                     628,000

UFC 167                     998,000

UFC on Fox 9             613,000

UFC 168                     1,554,000

UFC on Fox 10           713,000

UFC 169                     933,000

Payout Perspective:

The prelims saw a decrease from the much hyped UFC 168 event of which the prelims drew 1.5 million viewers.  The viewership is respectable considering the fighters on the card and the lack of hype for the main card.  It is interesting that the Prelims were the highest rated show on FS1 during Super Bowl week which still shows the value UFC programming has with FS1.

Good numbers. As is easy to see. Numbers are climbing on FS1. This wasn’t a record. But the last 3 PPV prelims have all been the highest rated prelims. Those big PPV’s and the events on FS1 have increased the regular prelims ratings. It shows that the UFC is either getting back more of those fans lost in the transition or creating new fans. I would like to say FS1 is growing and giving the UFC a better platform to start with. But some of their shows numbers are still to low to suggest that. But they do have more shows than before getting ratings. SO it could be helping a little. But the ratings for the UFC are up across the board. But still a long way to go…

This is a disappointment, losing 600k viewers from the last event. The UFC just doesn’t get it, their novelty based viewers don’t really care about the sport, only tune in when there is some kind of oddity that they are interested in. They nibble but don’t bite. Face it your not going to get consistant casual fans. Spending way too much money and for what?

You are not making any sense. Every form of entertainment flucuates based on the strength of the game, event, or performance. Not every movie gets blockbuster sales, not every baseball game gets Yankees vs Red Sox ratings. To expect any type of fan to care as much about the UFC 169 event as much as 168 is unrealistic.

Exactly! so why waste millions trying to attract new fans if all they are going to be is occasional or one time fans. Does that make sense? or are you going to spin that too?

How are they wasting millions? They are promoting the events just as they would do to remind hardcore fans. In the process they make new fans. Over time those casual fans become hardcore fans. Just like TUF fans. At first they were considered noob fans. The ones who are still following the sport are now hardcore fans and the Brock Lesnar era fans are now the noobs. Damn, feels like I am teaching kindergarten!

you are totally delusional! Look at the numbers, can you count? the numbers are getting lower over the last 5 years and the money they are spending is greater. lol
