Last week, we discussed Strikeforce’s announcement of a three-part documentary series titled “Collision Course: The Path to Diaz vs. Noons II”, which was produced by AllElbows.
The first episode premiered on Sherdog.com and will continue to do so for each video of the three-part documentary before it is distributed to other websites like Strikeforce.com and YouTube. The second part of the series was released today, just a few days before the Saturday night event takes place in San Jose.
Payout Perspective:
As was pointed out in the original write-up, this strategy is definitely something that Strikeforce needs to do in order to build up much needed buzz for their events. Unfortunately, there are only 4 days left for the event and it seems that the buzz is not at a level where they would like. Scott Coker and KJ Noons have been doing a good job of going out there and promoting the fights, but Nick Diaz has stayed quite and out of the spotlight, which is expected from a fighter who is not particularly fond of the promotional aspect of the business. Needless to say, KJ Noons has been doing a great job trying to bate a war of words between the two, but Diaz has stayed quiet and has not made promoting the fight any easier for Strikeforce.
It seems a major storyline coming into the fight is the bad blood between the two fighter, whether another brawl will take place, and the extra security hired to prevent it from happening. I would love to see a more concentrated effort on promoting the women’s title fight between Kaufman and Coenen and also a great fight at WW between two highly touted prospects in Tyron Woodley and Andre Galvao. It seems that the fight with the most buzz outside of the main event is the women’s title fight followed by the JZ Cavalcante vs Josh Thomson fight, which is definitely a fight geared for the hardcore fans. MMAPayout will continue to monitor the buzz and promotional effort as we get closer to the event.

It’s a real shame that Diaz decides to slap Strikeforce and Showtime in the face right when they are stepping up to do some promotion. Hopefully they don’t decide that it is a waste of time based on the actions of this buffoon.

These should have come out much earlier and they could have been done better as well, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Nick is a complicated guy, and if you want to hype a fight with him you have to think outside the box a little bit. He’s never going to be a guy who does a bunch of press conferences but something like this can help hype the fight.
