Vergil Ortiz sued Golden Boy Promotions in an attempt to get out of his promotional contract with Golden Boy.
The lawsuit stems from Ortiz’s desire to fight Jarron “Boots” Ennis next. Ennis is represented by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. De la Hoya claims that he is negotiating a deal with Hearn but the two sides are currently in a stalemate.
Ortiz argues that a clause in the contract allowed him to sever times with his promotional company.
In the event that Promoter’s distribution relationship with DAZN terminates, for any reason, and Promoter does not have an agreement in principle in place for an exclusive distribution relationship with an alternative broadcaster, then Boxer shall have the right to terminate this Agreement.

Although a formal legal response has not been made, Oscar de la Hoya, on behalf of his company made a response on social media in which he does not blame Ortiz, but his attorney (Canelo’s former attorney in his lawsuit to get out of DAZN/GBP contract) for the lawsuit.
Ortiz claims breach of contract among the claims which relate primarily to the above clause. He also claimed that de la Hoya was not working in the best interests of obtaining the best fights for his career. He cites de la Hoya’s “Clapback Thursdays” as an example. He also cites a video post on social media where he talks bad about Zuffa Boxing and the Saudi investment of the new promotion.

The lawsuit requests a declaratory judgment which would grant him the opportunity to exit the Golden Boy Promotional Agreement and head elsewhere.
Golden Boy has 30 days to respond to the lawsuit for which they will most likely file a Motion to Dismiss the claims. in the alternative, we will see if this will cause Golden Boy to hasten its efforts to satisfy Ortiz and negotiate a fight with Ennis.
