WWE announces Cena’s farewell match

September 30, 2025 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Washington D.C. and WWE announced that John Cena’s Final Match will be a part of Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

From the official press release:

WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings (NYSE: TKO), in partnership with Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the nation’s capital, today announced that 17-time World Champion John Cena’s final match will headline Saturday Night’s Main Event on Saturday, December 13, at Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

According to a tweet from a local Boston reporter, James Stewart, TKO was looking for $1.5 million (as of this past May) to hold Cena’s farewell match. Originally, the thought was that Cena’s farewell match would take place in his native Massachusetts and the TD Garden would be the logical choice.

However, it looks as though Boston was outbid (if they bid at all) with Washington, D.C.

This is in line with Mark Shapiro’s strategy of site fees and having TKO events going to the highest bidder. Even though Boston would have been the logical choice for Cena, D.C. Events looks to have come up with the winning bid.
